THE MOST-QUOTED WARNING IN GOOSE DOG WORK.

A veteran Kansas trainer told Ducks Unlimited that the absolute worst mistake you can make is taking a young, inexperienced dog on a field hunt for Canada geese, and that sending a novice after a lightly hit honker is a recipe for a bird-shy dog. A goose is bigger than anything a dog has handled in training, and a crippled one fights.

MAKE SURE THE BIRD IS DEAD BEFORE SENDING A YOUNG DOG.

A professional quoted by Ducks Unlimited is explicit: on a young dog's first goose hunt, confirm the birds are dead before sending, because you absolutely don't want a young dog going in on a crippled goose.

SHOW THE DOG WHERE TO GRAB.

Ducks Unlimited passes on the fix for a dog struggling with the size: go into the field, put the dog on the bird, and show it the easiest hold, the base of the neck on a smaller goose, between the shoulder and the wing bone on a big one. That single instruction solves most first-season goose problems.

GOOSE HUNTING IS WHERE DOGS BREAK, AND THERE'S A REASON.

SportDog explains it well: if a retriever is ever going to break, it will be on a goose hunt, because the action unfolds so much more slowly than a duck hunt. Three minutes or more can pass between the first call and birds committing. That's a long time for a dog to hold. The remedies are practical, a ground stake, a tie-down, fewer gunners, and for a young dog's first hunts, leaving the gun at home and handling the dog instead.

BLIND POSITION IS A TRAINING TOOL.

Ducks Unlimited recommends placing the dog blind behind the layout blind: it discourages breaking, and from behind, the dog can follow the gun barrel and mark birds quickly. In a field of prone hunters shooting from their backs, an uncontrolled dog is a safety problem, not just a nuisance.

WING-TIPPED GEESE GLIDE A LONG WAY.

Because a hit goose can sail well past the spread before coming down, professionals stress handling, marking multiple falls, then hand signals. This is where blind-retrieve training earns its keep.

THE COLD-SIT, NOT THE COLD-SWIM.Sources thin

Field goose hunting means long stationary periods in wind on frozen or bare ground, with brief bursts of hard work. Different exposure profile from marsh hunting: less water, more wind chill and inactivity.

Where and when

Cut grain, corn, wheat, barley, peas, plus pasture, sheet water, rivers, and reservoirs. The pattern is roost-to-feed: birds roost on water and fly to feed, and the setup goes under the flight line. Many states hold early September Canada goose seasons, an excellent chance to introduce a young dog to waterfowling, with the caveat about crippled birds. Resident and migrant populations behave differently, and seasons often reflect that.

Hazards to the dog

  • Injury from a crippled goose, the defining risk for a young dog
  • Cold and wind exposure on long stationary sits
  • Frozen and rough ground on long retrieves
  • Ice on field water
  • Stubble, pads and eyes
  • Safety exposure in a field of prone hunters if the dog breaks
