The dog read

DOESN'T HOLD, AND THAT'S THE WHOLE PROBLEM.

RuffedGrouse.com is direct: a pointing dog has to learn quickly that ruffed grouse are rarely willing to sit tight and will flush out of cover fast. Grouse are known for caginess, wariness, and difficulty being pinned. A dog that crowds birds will never see one on the ground.

A GROUSE DOG POINTS FROM FARTHER OUT THAN ANY OTHER BIRD DOG.

Northwoods offers a practical tell for reading a point: woodcock tend to be close to the dog, ruffed grouse usually farther away. The distance is the diagnosis.

SCENTING: THE THINNEST SCENT IN THE UPLANDS.

Northwoods notes grouse are smaller than pheasants and tend to be solitary, which makes them harder to locate, less bird, less scent, no covey to concentrate it. Dive Bomb notes that moisture helps hold scent in the air and on the ground, and that cold dry days make scenting tough while damp conditions let a seasoned dog shine.

WET DAYS FAVOR THE DOG.Sources thin

Dive Bomb observes grouse often use wet days to sit tight, relying on dense cover and staying put. Damp cover plus a sitting bird is the best combination a grouse dog gets.

RETRIEVE: THICK COVER, SHORT DISTANCE.Sources thin

Birds fall into tangles, alder, blowdown, briar. The retrieve is short and the finding is hard.

Where and when

Early successional forest, young aspen, alder bottoms, overgrown apple, rock walls, edges of cuts. Coverts are specific and repeatable; a hunter's list of productive coverts is the real asset. Woodcock overlap grouse cover through migration, then leave.

Hazards to the dog

  • Thick cover, eye injuries from sticks and briar
  • Blowdown and hidden holes
  • Barbed wire in old farm coverts
  • Ticks in warm early season
  • Porcupines in northern coverts
