American Hairless Terrier.

AKC: a small to medium, smoothly muscled and active terrier; ancestors were bred to hunt rats and other vermin; the lack of coat on the hairless variety makes them unsuited for most hunting, but they kept a strong hunting instinct and excel in many other activities and sports. UKC: same history and the same limit for the hairless variety; both varieties keep a strong hunting instinct and the coated dogs are fearless, tenacious hunters. Wikipedia: a companion dog developed from naturally hairless Rat Terriers. AKC breed page: a Louisiana native with 'true terrier grit and courage'..

The lines

Within one breed the line can matter more than the breed. Where the lines differ, the page says which one a value belongs to.

coated

Coated variety: short smooth dense coat with some white; born in the same litters as hairless dogs; docking optional. UKC shows coated before hairless.

hairless

Hairless variety: hairless by about 6 to 10 weeks; tail never docked (AKC); shown separately from the coated in the UKC.

Coat

coated lineAKC: coated variety has a short, smooth, dense coat with a sheen; whiskers are not removed; wire, broken or long coat is a disqualification. UKC: short, dense, smooth with a sheen; may be solid white, bi-color, tri-color, sable or brindle but must always show some white; merle and albinism are disqualifications. Coated dogs are part of the breed: some Rat Terrier crosses are still used.

Breed clubAKC breed standard, 2010

hairless lineAKC: hairless puppies are born with a soft vestigial down and are completely hairless by about 8 to 10 weeks; a mature hairless dog is free of hair except whiskers and guard hairs on the eyebrows and muzzle, with short very fine (vellus) hair allowed; the skin is smooth and warm to the touch. UKC: puppies hairless by 6 to 8 weeks; vellus hair longer than 1 mm on a dog over six months is a serious fault; the hairless variety may sweat when overheated or stressed. Skin any color, usually parti-colored with freckles that enlarge with age and darken in the sun. Wikipedia: very susceptible to sunburn and hypothermia.

Heat tolerance

coated line4 of 5 · UKC and AKC: coated variety has a short, dense, smooth coat with a sheen.

DerivedUnited Kennel Club, 2006

Derived from the coat description (short dense smooth = 4 on the ruled scale). No hairless-line value is given: the ruled scale is for haired coats, and the standards say only that the hairless dog sweats when overheated and needs protection from sun and winter cold.

Breed clubAKC

AKC scores are the AKC's own 1-5 bands, not a measurement. The UKC 'unlimited energy' line is about the coated hunters.

Breed clubAKC breed standard, 2010

Origin: UKC history says the first hairless (Josephine, 1972) was born in a litter of purebred Rat Terriers, and the breeder never used any dog but Rat Terriers. Some Rat Terrier crosses are still allowed to widen the gene pool.

Primary game

UKC: rats and other rodents (jaws hinged to open wide enough to catch rats and other rodents). AKC: rats and other vermin.
