UKC Terrier · FCI standard 64
Austrian Pinscher.
FCI 64 utilization: watch and companion dog (Group 2 Pinscher, Section 1.1, without working trial); assertive, lively, alert, playful, devoted to familiar people, suspicious of strangers and an incorruptible guard; hunting instinct only slightly developed. UKC: descends from versatile Austrian country pinschers used as farm dogs; a useful guard dog. Wikipedia: farm dogs that kept barns free of rats and acted as home guards, livestock guardians and drovers; UKC recognition (2006) is in the Terrier Group for its background as a rat hunter..
Breed sets the odds. The parents set the dog. Every number here shows its source, its spread and how sure we are. Nothing on this page is a prediction about one dog.
The body
What the breed is built like. Registry standards give an ideal, not a range.
Height at the shoulder
Low and high span UKC, FCI and the Wikipedia breed-wide range (42 to 50 cm = 16.5 to 19.7 in).
Coat
Heat tolerance
Derived from the standard's coat (medium double coat = 3). No measured data.
The work
What it was built to do in the field, and what a test or trial asks of it.
Role
FCI says the hunting instinct is slight; Wikipedia and the UKC history give the rat-hunting farm-dog background. Both stand.
Primary game
Editorial for the quarry; the FCI statement of a slight hunting instinct is registry and disagrees in emphasis.

How to read this page
Every value carries a label. Measured means peer-reviewed data on many dogs. Studied means peer-reviewed, smaller or indirect. Breed club means a club or registry states it. Editorial means expert opinion with no measurement behind it. Where two good sources disagree, both are shown and neither is averaged.
Published when the entry rests on the best information available from no fewer than three independent sources, checked by a second pass that did not write it. 2 sources on this page. Found something wrong? Tell us and the correction is logged with its date.
