Azawakh.

FCI 307: sighthound that hunts for game and fights off predators; an important companion in the family life of the nomads, sharing camp life (Group 10, Section 3, short-haired sighthounds, without working trial). UKC: the hound vocations "were, and still are, the chase, guarding and companionship," bred by the nomadic tribes of the southern Sahara as hunting and guard dogs. RKC: also guardian of the camp. Wikipedia: unlike other sighthounds, its primary function in its native land is as a guard dog..

Three registries agree.

Coat

AKC: skin fine and tight; hair short, fine, down to none on the belly; colour and markings immaterial; harsh or semi-long coat is a serious fault. UKC: short and fine; harsh or long coat is a disqualification; colours fawn (clear sand to dark red), white, black, gray, blue, parti-color and browns, with or without white markings and dark mask. FCI 307: fawn (clear sand to mahogany) with or without brindle, white patching limited to the extremities; a black mask is allowed.

Breed clubAKC breed standard

The AKC accepts any colour, UKC lists a broad palette, and FCI limits colours to fawn shades with brindle; stated by source.

Primary game

FCI 307: gazelles, hares, ostriches. RKC: mostly gazelle. Wikipedia: gazelle and hare at speeds up to 65 km/h (40 mph).

Breed clubFCI-Standard N° 307

FCI utilization line; RKC and Wikipedia agree on gazelle.

Also used on

FCI 307: fights off predators (hyenas, jackals, lions). RKC: guards the camp. Wikipedia: in the guard role it barks to alert the pack, then the pack chases off or attacks the predator.

Breed clubFCI-Standard N° 307

Predator-fighting is a guard role, not game; shown here because the FCI puts it in the utilization line.

Search pattern

RKC: used mostly on gazelle, hunting in packs, taking turns and thus exhausting the prey. Wikipedia: more of a pack hunter than other sighthounds, and the pack bumps the tired quarry down with their hindquarters. UKC: a sighthound; the chase is one of its vocations. Voice on the line is not stated for the hunt (AKC breed page barking level 1 of 5).

Field trial standard

AKC Lure Coursing (breed eligible; dogs one year or older): tests are non-competitive pass/fail checks of coursing instinct, trials are competitive. In a trial hounds run in packs of three, each in a coloured blanket, behind a mechanical white-plastic lure on a 600+ yard course; judges score a maximum 50 points: overall ability, follow, speed, agility and endurance, 10 each. Stakes: Open (non-titled dogs), Specials (Field Champions) and Veteran. Titles: JC Junior Courser (two solo qualifying runs under two judges), QC Qualified Courser (a judge certifies a clean run with another hound), SC Senior Courser (qualifying scores at four trials under three judges), MC Master Courser (SC plus 25 more qualifying scores), FC Field Champion (15 championship points including two majors, under two judges; FC goes before the name). FCI 307 lists the Azawakh without a working trial. Wikipedia: also eligible for ASFA lure coursing and NOFCA open field coursing.

How to read this page

Every value carries a label. Measured means peer-reviewed data on many dogs. Studied means peer-reviewed, smaller or indirect. Breed club means a club or registry states it. Editorial means expert opinion with no measurement behind it. Where two good sources disagree, both are shown and neither is averaged.

Published when the entry rests on the best information available from no fewer than three independent sources, checked by a second pass that did not write it. 5 sources on this page. Found something wrong? Tell us and the correction is logged with its date.
