Belgian Laekenois.

AKC standard: intelligence, courage, alertness and devotion to master; protectiveness of the person and property of his master added to his inherent aptitude as a guardian of flocks and fields; watchful, attentive and always in motion when not under command; observant and vigilant with strangers but not apprehensive; affectionate and very possessive with those he knows; extreme shyness not desirable. FCI 15 utilisation: originally a sheep dog, today a working dog (guarding, defence, tracking, etc.) and an all-purpose service dog, as well as a family dog. RKC: versatile herding and armed services dog, widely used by the police and armed forces. Wikipedia (Belgian Shepherd): the Laekenois is the rarest variety; rough-haired Belgian Shepherds were traditionally guard dogs around Boom, guarding linen set out to bleach in the sun; in recent times the Belgian Army has employed the Laekenois in a variety of roles; it is considered very good with children but can occasionally be troublesome with other dogs..

The body

What the breed is built like. Registry standards give an ideal, not a range.

Height at the shoulder

dogs 24.4 in (23 to 26.5) · bitches 22.8 in (21 to 24.5)

Breed clubFédération Cynologique Internationale, 2001

Four registry figures shown, never averaged; low and high span the desirable ranges the AKC, UKC and FCI print (disqualification limits are not counted). Center is the FCI ideal (58 cm); the AKC and UKC print ranges, not an ideal. The AKC standard and the AKC breed page agree. The Belgian Shepherd stands square: body length about equal to height at the withers (AKC, UKC, FCI).

Weight

dogs 55 to 66.1 lb · bitches 44.1 to 65 lb

Breed clubAKC

The AKC standard prints no weight; the AKC breed page prints one band for both sexes. Two registry figures shown, never averaged; low and high span both. No standard prints a single ideal weight, so center is blank.

FCI: roughness and dryness, rasping and tousled, about 6 cm long over the whole body, shorter on top of the muzzle, forehead and legs, with muzzle furnishings essential. UKC: rough, harsh and disorderly, the same length on all parts of the body, a hard rough beard and moustache mandatory.

Breed clubFédération Cynologique Internationale, 2001

Herding dog by origin; used for sheep. The police and military statements for the breed come from the RKC page and Wikipedia (editorial), shown beside the registry standards. Not a gun dog; hunting-specific traits are omitted.

Primary game

Sheep. FCI 15: originally a sheep dog. UKC: developed in Belgium as a herding dog to work sheep, able to move and tend the flock all day and guard it from all invaders. AKC standard: an aptitude as a guardian of flocks.

Stock dog, not a hunting dog; the stock worked is sheep in the sources read.

Also used on

Non-stock work. FCI 15: guarding, defence, tracking and all-purpose service work. RKC: police and armed forces service. Wikipedia: the Belgian Army has employed the Laekenois in a variety of roles in recent times; rough-haired Belgian Shepherds traditionally guarded linen bleaching in the fields around Boom.

Search pattern

Tending and guarding style, always moving. UKC: moves and tends the flock all day and guards it; a natural tendency to be in motion. FCI 15 gait: always on the move, seems tireless, can change direction suddenly at full speed, and has a definite tendency to move in circles because of its desire to guard and protect.

No source read classifies the breed as gathering, driving or heeling; the entry records only what the standards say about how it moves around stock.

Field trial standard

FCI 15 classification: Group 1 Sheepdogs and Cattle Dogs (except Swiss Cattle Dogs), Section 1 Sheepdogs, with working trial. UKC shows the four varieties in conformation in the order Groenendael, Laekenois, Malinois, Tervueren.

How common the problems are

Evaluated dogs skew toward breeding stock; the numbers are still the best there are.

Hip dysplasia

4.5% · 4.5% dysplastic of 202 OFA hip evaluations on record (current all-data, accessed Oct 9 2026); 95.0% normal; mild 1.5%, moderate 2.5%, severe 0.5%; breed rank 185 in the OFA table

MeasuredOrthopedic Foundation for Animals

Voluntary registry: affected dogs are under-reported and evaluated dogs skew toward breeding stock, so true prevalence is higher. Small sample (n = 202), so the percentage moves a lot with a few dogs.

Elbow dysplasia

18.1% · 18.1% abnormal of 193 OFA elbow evaluations on record (current all-data, accessed Oct 9 2026); 81.9% normal; grade 1 13.0%, grade 2 4.1%, grade 3 1.0%; breed rank 27 in the OFA table

MeasuredOrthopedic Foundation for Animals

Same voluntary-registry caveat as hips: affected dogs are under-reported and evaluated dogs skew toward breeding stock. Small sample (n = 193), so the percentage moves a lot with a few dogs.
