Belgian Malinois.

AKC standard: 'balances all the qualities needed in a stock dog, protector and sensible working partner'; alert, intelligent, inquisitive, confident, energetic and highly responsive to his owner's direction, an exceptional watchdog, loyal to those he loves and possibly indifferent with strangers; fear or aggression to be severely penalized. FCI 15 utilisation: originally a sheep dog, today a working dog (guarding, defence, tracking, etc.) and an all-purpose service dog, as well as a family dog. RKC: versatile herding and armed services dog, widely used by the police and armed forces. Wikipedia (Belgian Shepherd): the Malinois in particular has become increasingly popular with customs, military, border guard and police forces; it names the US Armed Forces, the US Secret Service, the Israel Defense Forces' Oketz Unit, the Australian Defence Force and the Kruger National Park anti-poaching canine unit as users; Belgian Shepherds of all varieties are also used for detection, search and rescue and as guide and assistance dogs..

Breed sets the odds. The parents set the dog. Every number here shows its source, its spread and how sure we are. Nothing on this page is a prediction about one dog.

The body

What the breed is built like. Registry standards give an ideal, not a range.

Height at the shoulder

dogs 24.4 in (23 to 26.5) · bitches 22.8 in (21 to 24.5)

Breed clubFédération Cynologique Internationale, 2001

Four registry figures shown, never averaged; low and high span the desirable ranges the AKC, UKC and FCI print (disqualification limits are not counted). Center is the FCI ideal (58 cm); the AKC and UKC print ranges, not an ideal. The AKC standard and the AKC breed page agree. The Belgian Shepherd stands square: body length about equal to height at the withers (AKC, UKC, FCI).

Weight

dogs 55.1 to 80 lb · bitches 40 to 60 lb

Breed clubAKC

The AKC standard prints no weight. Two registry figures shown, never averaged; low and high span both. No standard prints a single ideal weight, so center is blank.

Coat

AKC standard: comparatively short, straight, hard enough to be weather resistant, dense undercoat; very short on head, ears and lower legs; somewhat longer around the neck (collarette), on the tail and the backs of the thighs; the coat conforms to the body without standing out or hanging down; no undercoat to form a double coat, or hair too long, silky or wiry, is a fault; ideal colour a rich fawn to mahogany with black-tipped hairs (overlay, never patched or brindled) and a black mask. UKC and FCI describe the same short-haired variety (UKC: tail hair simulates an ear of wheat). 'The Belgian Malinois is a natural breed and there is no need for excessive grooming' (AKC standard).

The dog at home

What the breed asks of a day. The first thing most homes get wrong.

More than 2 hours per day

Breed clubThe Royal Kennel Club

RKC band mapped: more than 2 hours = 150. The RKC page is shared by all four varieties.

Exercise need

RKC: more than 2 hours per day (suited to a large house and large garden, town or country). AKC breed page: energy level 4 of 5 and mental stimulation needs 4 of 5 (AKC 1-5 trait bands). Role

Breed clubFédération Cynologique Internationale, 2001

Herding dog by origin; used for sheep. The police and military statements for the breed come from the RKC page and Wikipedia (editorial), shown beside the registry standards. Not a gun dog; hunting-specific traits are omitted.

Primary game

Sheep. FCI 15: originally a sheep dog. UKC: developed in Belgium as a herding dog to work sheep, able to move and tend the flock all day and guard it from all invaders. AKC standard: an aptitude as a guardian of flocks.

Breed clubUnited Kennel Club, 2024

Stock dog, not a hunting dog; the stock worked is sheep in the sources read.

Also used on

Non-stock work. FCI 15: guarding, defence, tracking and all-purpose service work. RKC: police and armed forces service. Wikipedia: the Malinois is the variety most used by customs, military, border-guard and police forces; the Belgian Shepherd is also trained for detection, search and rescue, guarding, guiding and assistance work.

Breed clubFédération Cynologique Internationale, 2001

FCI and RKC are registry statements; the Wikipedia sentence is editorial and cites other sources not opened.

Search pattern

Tending and guarding style, always moving. UKC: moves and tends the flock all day and guards it; a natural tendency to be in motion. FCI 15 gait: always on the move, seems tireless, can change direction suddenly at full speed, and has a definite tendency to move in circles because of its desire to guard and protect.

Breed clubUnited Kennel Club, 2024

No source read classifies the breed as gathering, driving or heeling; the entry records only what the standards say about how it moves around stock.

Field trial standard

FCI 15 classification: Group 1 Sheepdogs and Cattle Dogs (except Swiss Cattle Dogs), Section 1 Sheepdogs, with working trial. UKC shows the four varieties in conformation in the order Groenendael, Laekenois, Malinois, Tervueren.

How common the problems are

Evaluated dogs skew toward breeding stock; the numbers are still the best there are.

Hip dysplasia

5% · 5.0% dysplastic of 6,885 OFA hip evaluations on record (current all-data, accessed Oct 9 2026); 94.6% normal; mild 3.5%, moderate 1.4%, severe 0.2%; breed rank 181 in the OFA table

MeasuredOrthopedic Foundation for Animals

Voluntary registry: affected dogs are under-reported and evaluated dogs skew toward breeding stock, so true prevalence is higher.

Elbow dysplasia

8.8% · 8.8% abnormal of 5,574 OFA elbow evaluations on record (current all-data, accessed Oct 9 2026); 91.1% normal; grade 1 7.8%, grade 2 1.0%, grade 3 0.1%; breed rank 56 in the OFA table

MeasuredOrthopedic Foundation for Animals

Same voluntary-registry caveat as hips: affected dogs are under-reported and evaluated dogs skew toward breeding stock.

How to read this page

Every value carries a label. Measured means peer-reviewed data on many dogs. Studied means peer-reviewed, smaller or indirect. Breed club means a club or registry states it. Editorial means expert opinion with no measurement behind it. Where two good sources disagree, both are shown and neither is averaged.

Published when the entry rests on the best information available from no fewer than three independent sources, checked by a second pass that did not write it. 8 sources on this page. Found something wrong? Tell us and the correction is logged with its date.
