Bichon Frise.

FCI 215 utilization: companion dog (Group 9, Section 1.1 Bichons). RKC Toy group: small companion or lap dogs. RKC history: thought to have existed on Tenerife as far back as the 14th century and taken to mainland Europe by traders, popular in royal courts and the homes of nobility, where it was pampered and carried in an ornamental basket. FCI history: accompanied kings and nobles in the 17th and 18th centuries; revived in France and Belgium after the two world wars. UKC: documented since the 14th century, brought from Tenerife by French sailors..

The body

What the breed is built like. Registry standards give an ideal, not a range.

Height at the shoulder

9 to 12 in

Breed clubAKC breed standard, 1988

AKC, UKC and FCI agree closely; the standards print a preferred range, not a single ideal, so center is blank. low/high are the outer limits the AKC and UKC allow (9 and 12 in); FCI's outer limits (9.1 and 11.8 in) sit inside them.

Weight

11 to 18 lb

Breed clubAKC

The AKC page band and the FCI figure differ (12 to 18 lb against about 11 lb); both are shown and low/high span them. FCI prints one 'approximately' figure rather than a range, so center is left blank.

Coat

AKC and UKC: double coat, soft dense undercoat and coarser curlier outer coat, plush or velvet to the touch, springing back when patted; a limp silky coat, a coat that lies down or lack of undercoat are serious faults. FCI 215: profuse, loose spiral curls over a soft dense undercoat, neither flat nor corded, woolly or matted. Colour white; shadings of buff, cream or apricot allowed up to 10 percent (AKC, UKC); FCI: pure white, champagne tinge only before 12 months. Drop ears; plumed tail carried over the back.

Shedding

RKC breed page lists 'Sheds: No'. AKC page shedding level 1 of 5 (AKC band).

Registry bands, reported as printed; neither source is a shedding or allergy study.

Heat tolerance

3 of 5 · AKC standard: soft dense undercoat with a coarser, curlier outer coat, bathed and brushed to stand off the body. UKC: double coated, under and outer coat. FCI 215: profuse loose spiral curls over a soft dense undercoat. Not a flat-faced breed.

The dog at home

What the breed asks of a day. The first thing most homes get wrong.

Exercise need

RKC: up to 30 minutes per day; suits a flat or apartment; small to medium garden; town or country.

Breed clubThe Royal Kennel Club

RKC is a UK registry band, not a study; mapped by the library rule (up to 30 = 30).

Exercise need

RKC: up to 30 minutes per day. AKC page energy level 4 of 5, mental stimulation needs 3 of 5, playfulness 4 of 5, trainability 4 of 5, barking level 3 of 5 (AKC bands). FCI 215: neither nervous nor often barking, very sociable with people and dogs, adapts readily. AKC standard temperament: gentle mannered, sensitive, playful and affectionate. UKC: merry, playful temperament.

AKC bands are not mapped to minutes; RKC supplies the minutes figure.

Grooming load

4 of 5 · RKC: grooming every day; medium coat length. AKC page: coat grooming frequency 5 of 5 (AKC band). AKC standard: coat trimmed to reveal the natural outline, rounded off but never cut so short as to look overly trimmed; head, beard, moustache, ears and tail left longer; coat long enough to keep the powder-puff look. FCI 215: clipping accepted; hair on loins and flanks shortened but not below 3 cm; ears, beard and moustache shaped to a round or bell head. RKC: show presentation has become much more stylised than the standard suggests.

Breed clubThe Royal Kennel Club

RKC band mapped by the library rule (every day = 4, daily or regular clipping). The AKC page scores the coat 5 of 5; no source read prints a groomer interval for this breed, so the 5 (professional every 4 to 8 weeks) is not asserted.

How common the problems are

Evaluated dogs skew toward breeding stock; the numbers are still the best there are.

Hip dysplasia

8.2% · 5,301 OFA hip evaluations, current all-data, accessed Oct 9 2026; 8.2% dysplastic (mild 6.8, moderate 1.2, severe 0.2), 91.0% normal. OFA rank 150.

MeasuredOrthopedic Foundation for Animals

OFA's own breed statistics. OFA-evaluated dogs skew toward breeding stock (owners and breeders submit films, and poor results are less likely to be submitted), so this is not the rate across all dogs of the breed; the true population rate is not known.

Elbow dysplasia

Most common disorders

Wikipedia: a US study of immune-mediated hemolytic anemia found the Bichon Frise overrepresented, 9% of cases against 2% of the control population; a UK study found the breed 9.26 times more likely to have non-mucocele gall bladder disease than other dogs. RKC health standard for the breed: eye testing under the BVA/KC/ISDS Eye Scheme.

What the studies found

Population-level findings, shown as a spread. Breed sets the odds; the parents set the dog.

Aggression, as studied

Duffy, Hsu and Serpell 2008, online C-BARQ sample, 65 Bichon Frises (50.8% female, 90.8% neutered, mean age 4.3 years): 3 dogs (4.6%) scored the maximum on the stranger-directed snaps/bites/attempts items, 1 (1.5%) on owner-directed, 3 (4.6%) on dog-directed; dog rivalry 2 of 48 dogs in multi-dog households (4.2%).

StudiedDuffy D.L., 2008

Table 4 counts only. The breed is not in Table 5 (the 8 breeds common to both surveys), so no breed mean is published for the stranger-, owner- or dog-directed subscales and those rows are left out. Owner-questionnaire population data, never a prediction for one dog.

How to read this page

Every value carries a label. Measured means peer-reviewed data on many dogs. Studied means peer-reviewed, smaller or indirect. Breed club means a club or registry states it. Editorial means expert opinion with no measurement behind it. Where two good sources disagree, both are shown and neither is averaged.

Published when the entry rests on the best information available from no fewer than three independent sources, checked by a second pass that did not write it. 8 sources on this page. Found something wrong? Tell us and the correction is logged with its date.
