Border Terrier.

AKC standard: a working terrier of a size to go to ground, built to run quarry to earth and bolt it, and to follow a horse; 'hard as nails', 'game as they come' and driving in attack. UKC: kept pure by farmers and shepherds who needed legs long enough to follow a horse yet a dog small enough to go to ground after a fox. FCI 10: essentially a working terrier, capable of following a horse; classified Group 3 Section 1, without working trial. RKC: used as the earth dog with the Border Foxhounds (c. 1880). AKC Border Terrier Facts: an earth dog that followed quarry into dens, cornering it or encouraging it to bolt..

Search pattern

AKC standard: for work the dog must squeeze through narrow apertures and cross any terrain rapidly, 'running his quarry to earth and in bolting it therefrom'. AKC Border Terrier Facts: stamina to keep up with horses and hounds over a long chase, then the small agile build to go to ground; once there, the dog corners the quarry and eradicates it or encourages it to bolt. RKC: bred to run with foxhounds, generally less dog-aggressive than many terriers; Wikipedia adds the foxhounds were not small enough to enter the earths.

Field trial standard

AKC Earthdog: the Border Terrier is on the eligible-breeds list (dogs six months or older, AKC registered, PAL or FSS). FCI 10 classifies the breed Group 3 Section 1, without working trial. RKC: working and show lines remain closely aligned; working lines run with foxhound packs and go to ground after fox, tending to be leaner, harder in coat and often slightly smaller. Earthdog levels and rules not read.

How to read this page

Every value carries a label. Measured means peer-reviewed data on many dogs. Studied means peer-reviewed, smaller or indirect. Breed club means a club or registry states it. Editorial means expert opinion with no measurement behind it. Where two good sources disagree, both are shown and neither is averaged.

Published when the entry rests on the best information available from no fewer than three independent sources, checked by a second pass that did not write it. 6 sources on this page. Found something wrong? Tell us and the correction is logged with its date.
