AKC Herding · UKC Herding · FCI standard 191
Bouvier des Flandres.
AKC standard: origin is a cattle herder and general farmer's helper, including cart pulling; an ideal farm dog; used as an ambulance and messenger dog; now a watch and guard dog and family guardian; scenting ability suits tracking and guide-dog work. FCI 191 utilization: originally a herding dog, draught dog and churning dog; now above all a guard dog for the estate and farm and a defence and police dog; scent, initiative and intelligence warrant use as a tracking dog, a messenger dog and a gamekeeper's dog. UKC: herded and drove cattle (the name means cattle drover, toucheur de boeuf); since used for police and army work, personal guard, guide dog for the blind and search and rescue. Wikipedia: cattle droving, sheep herding and cart pulling, now guard and police dogs and pets.
Breed sets the odds. The parents set the dog. Every number here shows its source, its spread and how sure we are. Nothing on this page is a prediction about one dog.
The body
What the breed is built like. Registry standards give an ideal, not a range.
Height at the shoulder
Low and high span AKC/UKC and FCI. AKC and FCI print different ideals (25 in vs 62 cm = 24.4 in), so center is left blank.
Weight
Breed-wide AKC band counted in both sex rows. AKC's 70 lb floor is above the FCI and Wikipedia female figures; both stand.
Coat
Shedding
Heat tolerance
Derived from the coat description (2 = heavy double coat).
How long they live, and what they cost
Measured on real dogs, with the sample and the spread. Never a guess.
Median lifespan
UK pet-dog sample.
The dog at home
What the breed asks of a day. The first thing most homes get wrong.
Exercise need
Energy
Grooming load
AKC breed page trait score, 1 to 5: a breed-club tendency, never a measurement.
Grooming
The work
What it was built to do in the field, and what a test or trial asks of it.
Role
The Bouvier is a cattle drover and farm dog (FCI Section 2, cattle dogs), not a sheep tender like the Beauceron or Briard.

How common the problems are
Evaluated dogs skew toward breeding stock; the numbers are still the best there are.
Hip dysplasia
Voluntary registry: affected dogs are under-reported and evaluated dogs skew toward breeding stock, so true prevalence is higher.
Elbow dysplasia
Same voluntary-registry caveat as hips: under-reported, skewed toward breeding stock.

akc bands
Fourteen AKC bands in one row; the selector reads each by name. Breed-club ratings: a tendency, never a measurement.
What to ask a breeder for
The health clearances the breed’s own club and registry name. Reference only: what to ask for, never a statement about any dog’s health.

How to read this page
Every value carries a label. Measured means peer-reviewed data on many dogs. Studied means peer-reviewed, smaller or indirect. Breed club means a club or registry states it. Editorial means expert opinion with no measurement behind it. Where two good sources disagree, both are shown and neither is averaged.
Published when the entry rests on the best information available from no fewer than three independent sources, checked by a second pass that did not write it. 6 sources on this page. Found something wrong? Tell us and the correction is logged with its date.
