UKC Gun Dog · FCI standard 133

Braque Francais, Gascogne type.

FCI 133 utilization: 'Pointing dog' (Group 7, Section 1.1, with working trial); a pointing dog of medium proportions, noble appearance, powerful 'without excessive heaviness'. UKC: 'a Braque type pointing dog of medium proportions and noble appearance'. Wikipedia: 'not just pointers, but versatile hunting dogs that can retrieve, flush, and even trail game'.

Breed sets the odds. The parents set the dog. Every number here shows its source, its spread and how sure we are. Nothing on this page is a prediction about one dog.

The body

What the breed is built like. Registry standards give an ideal, not a range.

Height at the shoulder

dogs 24.5 in (22.8 to 27.2) · bitches 24.5 in (22 to 26.8)

Breed clubFCI-Standard No. 133, 2023

Center is the UKC preferred size (printed once for both sexes). Low is the UKC floor (22 in), high the FCI ceiling (68 cm). Conversions: 58 cm = 22.8 in, 68 = 26.8. FCI and UKC both note females are finer.

Weight

53 to 70 lb

Breed clubCanadian Kennel Club, 2023

One registry figure behind the range; no sex split. The 75 lb is a historical remark about the 19th century type, not a current standard, and is not spanned. Conversions: 24 kg = 52.9 lb, 32 kg = 70.5 lb.

Coat

FCI 133 and UKC: 'rather thick and well furnished', finer on the head and ears. Colour chestnut brown, or chestnut brown and white (solid, strongly speckled, or with tan above the eyes, at the lips and on the legs). CKC: 'rather thick and smooth'. Wikipedia: the Gascogne coat is thicker than the Pyrenees type's, which is shorter and finer

fci_133, ukc_gdt, ckc_gasc, wiki_bf. Disqualifying nose faults (FCI/UKC): split nose, pronounced depigmentation. CKC also disqualifies black specks or black hairs in the coat. No undercoat is described by any source.

Heat tolerance

3 of 5 · 3 of 5: rather thick, well furnished coat, thicker than the Pyrenees type's; no undercoat described

DerivedFCI-Standard No. 133, 2023

Derived from the FCI 133 and UKC coat text (thicker than the short fine Pyrenean coat, which was scored 4 on braque-francais-pyrenees). Not a measured value.

The work

What it was built to do in the field, and what a test or trial asks of it.

Role

FCI 133 utilization: 'Pointing dog' (Group 7, Section 1.1, with working trial); a pointing dog of medium proportions, noble appearance, powerful 'without excessive heaviness'. Search pattern

Gun Dog 2004: the Gascogne 'exhibits a slow and methodical movement afield', against the Pyrenees type's quick, gliding gait. Wikipedia (citing the same article): 'the Gascogne is a slower moving dog'

EditorialChad Mason, 2004

One magazine article (2004), second-hand for the Gascogne type: the author notes no Gascogne dogs had been imported to North America, so the description comes from the French breed history, not North American field work. Wikipedia repeats it rather than adding a source.

Field trial standard

FCI 133: classified 'with working trial' (Group 7, Section 1.1). UKC recognizes the breed (2006). NAVHDA lists 'Braque Francais' among its 35 recognized breeds without naming a type; Gun Dog 2004 says no Gascogne-type dog had been imported to North America. The AKC pointing-breed hunt test list names the Pyrenean type only. French TAN and field-trial rules were not read

Cold water

2 of 5 · 2 of 5: single-layer 'rather thick' coat on a pointing dog; no water work is described for this type in any source read

DerivedFCI-Standard No. 133, 2023

Derived from coat only (fci_133, ukc_gdt). No source read describes Gascogne-type water work, so this carries less than the Pyrenees entry's score.

How to read this page

Every value carries a label. Measured means peer-reviewed data on many dogs. Studied means peer-reviewed, smaller or indirect. Breed club means a club or registry states it. Editorial means expert opinion with no measurement behind it. Where two good sources disagree, both are shown and neither is averaged.

Published when the entry rests on the best information available from no fewer than three independent sources, checked by a second pass that did not write it. 3 sources on this page. Found something wrong? Tell us and the correction is logged with its date.
