Braque Saint-Germain.
FCI 115 utilization: 'Pointing breed used principally on feather but can also hunt fur bearing game'; 'hunter above all', very sociable, equable and affectionate, 'won't suffer brusque treatment during its training', easy to train. UKC: sociable, easy to train, 'an excellent hunter, with a soft mouth'. Wikipedia: a versatile hunter used as gun dog and pointer and on other small game, but 'greatest fame as a showdog' (most shown pointing breed from the 1863 French show).
Breed sets the odds. The parents set the dog. Every number here shows its source, its spread and how sure we are. Nothing on this page is a prediction about one dog.
The body
What the breed is built like. Registry standards give an ideal, not a range.
Height at the shoulder
No ideal printed. The FCI English text prints the female maximum as '59 cm (28.7 in)'; 59 cm is 23.2 in, so 28.7 is a typo in the translation and 23.2 is used. Conversions: 54 cm = 21.3 in.
Weight
One registry page behind this value; no sex split.
Coat
fci_115 and ukc_sg. AKC page coat bands are zero in its data, so not used.
Shedding
AKC breed page trait score, 1 to 5: a breed-club tendency, never a measurement.
Heat tolerance
Derived from the FCI 115 and UKC coat text (short dense = 4).
The dog at home
What the breed asks of a day. The first thing most homes get wrong.
Exercise need
The AKC band is a 1 to 5 score, not minutes, so exercise_need_min is omitted. Single registry page.
Energy
AKC breed page trait score, 1 to 5: a breed-club tendency, never a measurement.
Grooming load
AKC breed page trait score, 1 to 5: a breed-club tendency, never a measurement.
Grooming
AKC page trait scores, 1 to 5; single registry source; the page has no grooming prose.
The work
What it was built to do in the field, and what a test or trial asks of it.
Role
fci_115, ukc_sg, wiki_sg. Created c.1830 at the royal kennels at Compiegne from an English Pointer and a Continental pointer; French club formed March 1913 (FCI).
Primary game
fci_115 only; no editorial hunting source on the breed in North America was readable.
Range
Single standard behind this value.
Search pattern
fci_115 and ukc_sg.
Field trial standard
fci_115, navhda_breeds, akc_elig, ukc_sg. NAVHDA test statistics by breed are not published; no NAVHDA result for the breed was found.
Cold water
Derived from coat (fci_115, ukc_sg).
More
akc bands
Fourteen AKC bands in one row; the selector reads each by name. Breed-club ratings: a tendency, never a measurement.
How to read this page
Every value carries a label. Measured means peer-reviewed data on many dogs. Studied means peer-reviewed, smaller or indirect. Breed club means a club or registry states it. Editorial means expert opinion with no measurement behind it. Where two good sources disagree, both are shown and neither is averaged.
Published when the entry rests on the best information available from no fewer than three independent sources, checked by a second pass that did not write it. 2 sources on this page. Found something wrong? Tell us and the correction is logged with its date.
