AKC Toy · UKC Companion · FCI standard 81/80/82
Brussels Griffon.
FCI 80/81/82: small guardian and companion dog; stable ratter and carriage guard in its history. UKC: Belgian stable ratters and guardians of horse-drawn cabs. AKC page: from rough-and-tumble rat dog (griffon d'ecurie) to laptop companion. AKC standard: a toy dog, alert, with an almost human expression. RKC: one early role was as watchdog in stables, where he could also keep down rodents..
Breed sets the odds. The parents set the dog. Every number here shows its source, its spread and how sure we are. Nothing on this page is a prediction about one dog.
The body
What the breed is built like. Registry standards give an ideal, not a range.
Height at the shoulder
One breed-wide range counted in both sexes (no standard splits by sex). The registry page and Wikipedia differ; both shown, never averaged. FCI 80, 81 and 82 share one standard text; none of the three prints a height.
Weight
Low and high span every cited figure (AKC About text 5 to 15 lb; FCI 3.5 to 6 kg = 7.7 to 13.2 lb). The AKC and UKC standards agree on 8 to 10 and a 12 lb ceiling; the FCI sits higher, and the AKC page's own About text is wider than its header. All shown. The three FCI breeds share one standard so the one size figure is cited for all of them. No single ideal is printed, so center is blank.
Coat
The AKC and UKC treat all coats and colours as one breed; the FCI splits it into three. The FCI standard text is shared across 80, 81 and 82.
Shedding
Registry statements; no study opened.
Heat tolerance
Derived. The dog is brachycephalic (sources state it), which pulls the score down; the coat (short smooth, or wiry rough) alone would sit higher. Held at 2 as a flagged judgement. No heat-illness study was opened.
How long they live, and what they cost
Measured on real dogs, with the sample and the spread. Never a guess.
Median lifespan
McMillan et al. 2024 / Dogs Trust table. UK population; the table lists one Brussels Griffon row. The AKC page 12 to 15 year band is a band, not a median, and is not used here.
The dog at home
What the breed asks of a day. The first thing most homes get wrong.
Exercise need
RKC is a UK registry band, mapped by the library rule (up to 30 = 30). The AKC text agrees.
Exercise need
AKC bands are not mapped to minutes; RKC supplies the minutes figure.
Energy
AKC breed page trait score, 1 to 5: a breed-club tendency, never a measurement.
Grooming load
RKC band mapped by the library rule (more than once a week = 3). The rough coat for the show ring (hand-stripping) needs more skill than the figure suggests; the AKC page's weekly brushing for the smooth coat agrees.
The work
What it was built to do in the field, and what a test or trial asks of it.
Role
Companion breed today; the work is history.
Primary game
History only, not a current use. Wikipedia and the RKC say the same.
Field trial standard
No field test applies.
How common the problems are
Evaluated dogs skew toward breeding stock; the numbers are still the best there are.
Hip dysplasia
OFA's own breed statistics. OFA-evaluated dogs skew toward breeding stock (owners and breeders submit films, and poor results are less likely to be submitted), so this is not the rate across all dogs of the breed; the true population rate is not known. OFA rank 1 = highest rate among the breeds listed. The sample is small (227) and for a toy breed an OFA hip evaluation is often voluntary, so the figure is a registry reading. The AKC page lists hip dysplasia among the screens responsible breeders do.
Most common disorders
The Freeman cohort was recruited for the study from AKC-registered dogs, so it is not a random sample; the paper is the measured source. Wikipedia's other disorders rest on references that were not opened.
More
akc bands
Fourteen AKC bands in one row; the selector reads each by name. Breed-club ratings: a tendency, never a measurement.
What to ask a breeder for
The health clearances the breed’s own club and registry name. Reference only: what to ask for, never a statement about any dog’s health.

How to read this page
Every value carries a label. Measured means peer-reviewed data on many dogs. Studied means peer-reviewed, smaller or indirect. Breed club means a club or registry states it. Editorial means expert opinion with no measurement behind it. Where two good sources disagree, both are shown and neither is averaged.
Published when the entry rests on the best information available from no fewer than three independent sources, checked by a second pass that did not write it. 8 sources on this page. Found something wrong? Tell us and the correction is logged with its date.
