Bulldog.

A companion today. FCI 149 utilization: dissuasion and companion dog. UKC: the early dogs held bulls for the butcher, then were used in bull baiting; when those sports were outlawed in Britain the breed's function essentially ceased and it was reshaped into a shorter, squatter dog for the show ring. RKC: bull baiting reached Britain with the Normans, was banned in 1835, and companions kept in homes gave the nucleus for the modern breed. Bulldog Club of America: originally thought to be a butcher's dog used to subdue animals for slaughter, then bred for bull baiting; the fierce traits were bred out after 1835 to save the breed. Wikipedia (editorial): in 17th-century New York Bulldogs helped round up wild bulls, and the modern Bulldog could not do its original job..

Breed sets the odds. The parents set the dog. Every number here shows its source, its spread and how sure we are. Nothing on this page is a prediction about one dog.

The body

What the breed is built like. Registry standards give an ideal, not a range.

Height at the shoulder

14 to 15 in

Breed clubAKC

Only the AKC breed page prints a height, one band for both sexes; center is blank because no standard prints an ideal.

Weight

dogs 50 to 55.1 lb · bitches 40 to 50.7 lb

Breed clubAKC breed standard, 2016

Registries print different ideals (AKC about 40, UKC 45 to 50, FCI 23 kg), so center is blank and low and high span all three.

Coat

AKC: straight, short, flat, close, fine texture, smooth and glossy, no fringe, feather or curl; skin soft and loose with heavy head wrinkles and a two-fold dewlap; colors red, white, fawn, fallow or any combination, with brindle, piebald, ticking and black masks; merle disqualifies. UKC: short, straight, flat and close; colors preferred red brindle first, then other brindles, solid white, solid red, fawn or yellow, piebald; merle and albinism disqualify. FCI 149: fine texture, short, close and smooth; whole or smut (black mask) in red, fawn or white, brindle and pied. RKC: short coat.

Shedding

RKC: sheds (yes). AKC breed page: shedding level 3 of 5.

Heat tolerance

1 of 5 · RKC: Bulldogs are prone to overheating, so activity should always be limited in warm weather, and care should be taken to avoid exercising them in hot weather because of their brachycephalic (flat faced) airways. FCI 149: respiratory distress or excessive respiratory noise is unacceptable. Coat: AKC and UKC short, flat, smooth and glossy; FCI fine, short, close and smooth. Wikipedia (editorial): brachycephaly leaves the dog less able to shed heat by panting (hyperthermia).

DerivedThe Royal Kennel Club

Derived: a short coat alone would score 4 to 5, but the RKC states plainly that the breed overheats because of its flat-faced airways, which puts it on the bottom rung of the 1-5 scale (the scale's 1 is 'heavy coat + brachycephalic'; this breed has the brachycephaly, not the heavy coat). The step down from the coat is the RKC's statement, not a heat-illness study.

How long they live, and what they costSources differ

Two numbers, two measures. Median lifespan: in a large sample of this breed, the age by which half had died; read it as the typical lifespan (UK, 2024, 584,734 dogs). Life expectancy at birth: how many years a newborn of this breed is expected to live, worked from the death rates at every age in UK veterinary records, the same life-table method used for people (VetCompass, 2022). It runs lower because every early death pulls the average down and because it comes from clinics, not registries. KENAI leads with the median and shows the other beside it. Neither is averaged.

MeasuredMcMillan KM, 2024

Dogs Trust UK table from McMillan et al. 2024 (all-dog median 12.5 y in 584,734 dogs), row 'Bulldog'. Other measures, shown and not averaged: AKC breed page life expectancy band 8-10 years (a band, not a median); RKC 'under 10 years'; Wikipedia (editorial) cites a 2004 UK survey in which cardiac disease (20%), cancer (18%) and old age (9%) led the causes of death.

Life expectancy at birth

7.4 years (7.1 to 7.7)

MeasuredTeng K.T., 2022

Sources differ with median_lifespan_yr (9.8): a different measure (life expectancy at birth from VetCompass life tables vs median age at death in a registry-linked sample) and a different sample; both shown, never averaged. Wikipedia (editorial) reports the Teng figure as the second lowest of all breeds in that study; Teng 2022 Table 3 read at the nature.com table page.

The dog at home

What the breed asks of a day. The first thing most homes get wrong.

Exercise need

Up to 1 hour per day (RKC band); RKC text: low needs, generally two short, gentle walks a day

Breed clubThe Royal Kennel Club

RKC band mapped: up to 1 hour = 60. A ceiling for a breed whose RKC page says activity should be limited in warm weather.

Exercise need

RKC: up to 1 hour per day, low exercise needs, a couple of short gentle walks; prone to overheating, so limit activity in warm weather; small house suits, small to medium garden. AKC breed page: energy level 3 of 5, mental stimulation needs 3.

Breed clubThe Royal Kennel Club

Energy

RKC: low energy levels and adaptable, suited to flats and smaller homes provided not left alone for long periods. AKC breed page trait scores: energy level 3 of 5, playfulness 4, trainability 4, mental stimulation needs 3. RKC also calls the Bulldog strong willed and not among the quickest to train; short positive sessions work best.

Grooming load

2 of 5 · Once a week (RKC grooming band); coat length short; sheds

Breed clubThe Royal Kennel Club

RKC band mapped: once a week = 2. AKC breed page rates coat grooming frequency 3 of 5, so the two registries differ by a point; FCI and the standards add skin folds (face wrinkles and dewlap), which the RKC health section says can hold moisture and need care.

Grooming

RKC: once a week, short coat. AKC breed page: coat grooming frequency 3 of 5, drooling level 3 of 5. RKC health section on flat-faced dogs: excess skin folds around the face create a warm, moist place for bacteria and yeast to grow, with infection and itching.

Not a gun dog or a hunting breed. The historic work was bull baiting and holding bulls for the butcher; no source describes current field work, so primary_game and the other work traits are not recorded.

How common the problems are

Evaluated dogs skew toward breeding stock; the numbers are still the best there are.

Hip dysplasia

70.9% · 70.9% dysplastic of 1,664 OFA hip evaluations on record (current all-data, accessed Oct 9 2026); 26.9% normal; mild 34.2%, moderate 24.6%, severe 12.1%; breed rank 3. Wikipedia (editorial) cites an older OFA snapshot of 467 Bulldogs tested 1979-2009, 73.9% affected, and calls it the highest among all breeds then.

MeasuredOrthopedic Foundation for Animals

Voluntary registry: affected dogs are under-reported and evaluated dogs skew toward breeding stock, so true prevalence in the wider population is higher. OFA rank 1 = highest rate among the breeds listed. Only 22 Bulldogs had been scored in the BVA/KC scheme when the Wikipedia article was written, so that scheme says little.

Elbow dysplasia

40.1% · 40.1% abnormal of 1,061 OFA elbow evaluations on record (current all-data, accessed Oct 9 2026); 58.6% normal; grade 1 29.6%, grade 2 9.0%, grade 3 1.4%; breed rank 2

Most common disorders

Wikipedia (editorial) names brachycephalic airway obstruction (stertorous breathing, stridor, hyperthermia, anaesthetic risk), skin fold dermatitis, hip dysplasia, patellar luxation (2.9% of Bulldogs in an English study, nearly three times the risk), swimmer puppy syndrome, demodicosis (1.5% against 0.17% of all dogs), atopic dermatitis and hiatal hernia, and says over 80% of litters are delivered by caesarean section. It cites a Royal Veterinary College study in which Bulldogs had over twice the odds of at least one of the common disorders studied. Bulldog Club of America: Bulldogs can react badly to certain anesthetics, so find a vet who knows the breed. RKC (health section, flat-faced dogs): excessive soft tissue and narrow nostrils make breathing hard, skin folds infect, overcrowded teeth cause dental trouble, and shallow eye sockets raise the risk of eye injury; RKC FAQ lists breathing difficulties, skin fold infections, hip and elbow dysplasia and eye conditions.

How to read this page

Every value carries a label. Measured means peer-reviewed data on many dogs. Studied means peer-reviewed, smaller or indirect. Breed club means a club or registry states it. Editorial means expert opinion with no measurement behind it. Where two good sources disagree, both are shown and neither is averaged.

Published when the entry rests on the best information available from no fewer than three independent sources, checked by a second pass that did not write it. 9 sources on this page. Found something wrong? Tell us and the correction is logged with its date.
