Caucasian Shepherd Dog.

Guard dog and livestock guardian. FCI 328 utilization: guard and watchdog; historically used to guard herds, flocks and dwellings from beasts of prey and predators; selection work began in the USSR in the 1920s; temperament steady, active, self-confident, fearless and independent; devoted to its master. UKC: guardian of flocks and villages across the Caucasus for centuries; the former Soviet government used the breed to guard factories and government facilities; in the United States it has earned a reputation as a trustworthy service dog; spirited, strong-willed, gentle with family but very suspicious of strange people or dogs; slow to mature and headstrong; UKC says mild dog aggression is a normal characteristic and is not penalized. AKC breed page: a serious guardian breed that should never be taken lightly; bold, fearless and fierce when a threat is present, soft and devoted with family; watchdog and protective nature 5 of 5. Scientific Reports 2024 (Perfilyeva et al.): mtDNA analyses cited there show extremely low differentiation among the Caucasian, North Caucasian Volkodav, Central Asian, Akbash and Kangal breeds.

How to read this page

Every value carries a label. Measured means peer-reviewed data on many dogs. Studied means peer-reviewed, smaller or indirect. Breed club means a club or registry states it. Editorial means expert opinion with no measurement behind it. Where two good sources disagree, both are shown and neither is averaged.

Published when the entry rests on the best information available from no fewer than three independent sources, checked by a second pass that did not write it. 5 sources on this page. Found something wrong? Tell us and the correction is logged with its date.
