AKC Toy · UKC Companion · FCI standard 218
Chihuahua.
FCI 218 utilization: companion dog (Group 9 Companion and Toy Dogs, Section 6 Chihuahueno, without working trial); quick, alert, lively and very courageous. AKC: a graceful, alert, swift-moving compact little dog with a saucy expression and terrier-like qualities of temperament. UKC: a popular companion dog; courageous little watchdogs willing to defend their territory against strange people and dogs. RKC: the smallest breed in the world, with a huge personality in a tiny frame. FCI history: the Techichi of the Toltec civilization. Wikipedia: usually kept as a companion animal..
Breed sets the odds. The parents set the dog. Every number here shows its source, its spread and how sure we are. Nothing on this page is a prediction about one dog.
The lines
Within one breed the line can matter more than the breed. Where the lines differ, the page says which one a value belongs to.
Long coat: soft and fine, flat or slightly wavy, with fringing on ears, neck, legs, feet and tail; undercoat preferred (AKC). RKC lists it as a separate breed page.
Smooth coat: soft, close and glossy; heavier coats with an undercoat are permissible (AKC). RKC lists it as a separate breed page.
The body
What the breed is built like. Registry standards give an ideal, not a range.
Height at the shoulder
AKC page header is a summary, not the standard. Wikipedia's 12 to 15 in outliers are recorded in text; low/high span the AKC page and Wikipedia's usual range.
Weight
Center blank: the UKC and FCI ideals are ranges and the AKC prints a maximum. Span is the FCI permitted range (2.2 to 6.6 lb), which also covers the AKC maximum, the UKC ideal and the British preference. The UKC accepts dogs down to 1 lb. Pet dogs above the show limit are not in the span.
Coat

Shedding
AKC breed page trait score, 1 to 5: a breed-club tendency, never a measurement.
Heat tolerance
Derived from the coat description (medium-length coat with a light undercoat = 3 on the ruled scale).
Derived from the coat description (short close single coat = 5 on the ruled scale); dogs with an undercoat would score 4. The Chihuahua's size and its heat or cold response are not stated by any source read.
How long they live, and what they costSources differ
Two numbers, two measures. Median lifespan: in a large sample of this breed, the age by which half had died; read it as the typical lifespan (UK, 2024, 584,734 dogs). Life expectancy at birth: how many years a newborn of this breed is expected to live, worked from the death rates at every age in UK veterinary records, the same life-table method used for people (VetCompass, 2022). It runs lower because every early death pulls the average down and because it comes from clinics, not registries. KENAI leads with the median and shows the other beside it. Neither is averaged.
Median lifespan
McMillan et al. 2024 / Dogs Trust. UK population. The Dogs Trust median and Teng's life expectancy at birth differ by about four years; both are shown, neither is averaged.
Life expectancy at birth
Teng 2022 Table 3, life expectancy at birth, VetCompass UK clinic data. The partner row is the Dogs Trust median (11.8).
The dog at home
What the breed asks of a day. The first thing most homes get wrong.
Exercise need
RKC is a UK registry band, not a study; mapped by the library rule. AKC scores are the AKC's own bands.
Energy
AKC breed page trait score, 1 to 5: a breed-club tendency, never a measurement.
Grooming load
RKC band mapped by library rule; both coat varieties carry the same RKC band.
The work
What it was built to do in the field, and what a test or trial asks of it.
Role
FCI, AKC, UKC, RKC and Wikipedia. No source states hunting work.
How common the problems are
Evaluated dogs skew toward breeding stock; the numbers are still the best there are.
Hip dysplasia
OFA rank 177. OFA-evaluated dogs skew toward breeding stock, with normal results over-represented; the true population rate is likely higher. OFA all-data is undated.
Most common disorders
Wikipedia summary of cited studies that were not read directly; the AKC test list is the national breed club's own.
What the studies found
Population-level findings, shown as a spread. Breed sets the odds; the parents set the dog.
Aggression, as studied
Text findings only. Questionnaire study of self-selected owners; population-level. No bite statistics recorded.

akc bands
Fourteen AKC bands in one row; the selector reads each by name. Breed-club ratings: a tendency, never a measurement.
What to ask a breeder for
The health clearances the breed’s own club and registry name. Reference only: what to ask for, never a statement about any dog’s health.

How to read this page
Every value carries a label. Measured means peer-reviewed data on many dogs. Studied means peer-reviewed, smaller or indirect. Breed club means a club or registry states it. Editorial means expert opinion with no measurement behind it. Where two good sources disagree, both are shown and neither is averaged.
Published when the entry rests on the best information available from no fewer than three independent sources, checked by a second pass that did not write it. 10 sources on this page. Found something wrong? Tell us and the correction is logged with its date.
