The body

What the breed is built like. Registry standards give an ideal, not a range.

Height at the shoulder

dogs 9.5 to 12 in · bitches 8.5 to 11 in

Breed clubAKC breed standard, 2013

AKC, UKC and FCI agree on the ideal; low/high are the outer limits the AKC and UKC allow. Wikipedia (secondary) also prints a Coton de Tuléar Club of America standard of 9 to 13 in, with a rare 'Tall Coton' of 15 to 17 in; that reads as an older club standard, runs above every registry standard read (AKC maximum 12 in, UKC 12 in, FCI 11.8 in) and is shown in the text but not used for low/high.

Weight

low/high span AKC, UKC and FCI (7 to 13 lb). The Wikipedia 18 lb ceiling sits above every registry figure and is shown in the text only.

Coat

AKC: very soft, supple coat with the texture of cotton, dense and profuse, can be very slightly wavy; never hard or rough; atypical, tightly curled, woolly or silky hair is a severe fault; puppy coat softer. Colour white, with slight light grey or light tan shading on the ears and up to 5 percent light tan on the body of an adult; black on the body is a disqualification. FCI 283: white ground, slight light grey shading on the ears, other shadings tolerated if the coat still reads white. RKC accepted colours: white, white and brown, white and grey, white and lemon, white and tan. Wikipedia describes white, black-and-white and tricolour per the Coton de Tuléar Club of America.

Breed clubAKC breed standard, 2013

Registries differ on how much colour is allowed; the AKC disqualifies black on the body while Wikipedia's club colours include black-and-white.

Shedding

RKC breed page lists 'Sheds: No'. AKC page shedding level 2 of 5 (AKC band). Wikipedia states the Coton is a non-shedding breed with low dander and considers it hypoallergenic; Wikipedia also says a puppy may shed its puppy coat.

The dog at home

Grooming load

4 of 5 · RKC: grooming every day; long coat. AKC page: coat grooming frequency 4 of 5 (AKC band). AKC standard: shown as naturally as is consistent with good grooming, coat clean and free of mats; only the very bottom of the feet and between the pads may be trimmed; any other trimming or sculpting severely penalized. Wikipedia: matted hair is common and daily brushing and combing is advised; grooming 'can be quite a challenge'.

How to read this page

Every value carries a label. Measured means peer-reviewed data on many dogs. Studied means peer-reviewed, smaller or indirect. Breed club means a club or registry states it. Editorial means expert opinion with no measurement behind it. Where two good sources disagree, both are shown and neither is averaged.

Published when the entry rests on the best information available from no fewer than three independent sources, checked by a second pass that did not write it. 7 sources on this page. Found something wrong? Tell us and the correction is logged with its date.
