The body

What the breed is built like. Registry standards give an ideal, not a range.

Height at the shoulder

7.9 to 11 in

Breed clubAKC breed standard, 1991

AKC, UKC and FCI agree. AKC: length from shoulders to root of tail is one to two inches less than twice the height (FCI: preferably 2.5 to 5 cm less).

Weight

17.6 to 24.3 lb

Breed clubAKC breed standard, 1991

Span of AKC/UKC and FCI. FCI states the lower weights are preferred; AKC states overall balance matters more than any single specification.

Coat

AKC: crisp pily or pencilled double coat about 2 in long, hard but not wiry; very soft silky topknot (the silkier the better); colors pepper or mustard. UKC and FCI 168 agree, FCI giving the length as about 5 cm. RKC: does not shed.

UKC: otter and badger. RKC terrier-group text: terriers were bred to pursue fox, badger, rat and otter above and below ground. Wikipedia: hunted badgers and otters in the 1600s; Scott learned of the prowess of these terriers 'for working both fox and otter'; Willie 'Piper' Allan kept dogs for the hunting of otters.

How common the problems are

Evaluated dogs skew toward breeding stock; the numbers are still the best there are.

Most common disorders

Wikipedia: back problems with intervertebral discs because of the elongated body (disc herniation); an American study found extra-hepatic congenital portosystemic shunts in 1.6% of Dandie Dinmonts (0.18% overall, 0.05% mixed breeds); slightly higher cancer risk than average. AKC parent-club list recommends no health tests.

How to read this page

Every value carries a label. Measured means peer-reviewed data on many dogs. Studied means peer-reviewed, smaller or indirect. Breed club means a club or registry states it. Editorial means expert opinion with no measurement behind it. Where two good sources disagree, both are shown and neither is averaged.

Published when the entry rests on the best information available from no fewer than three independent sources, checked by a second pass that did not write it. 7 sources on this page. Found something wrong? Tell us and the correction is logged with its date.
