Primary game

Reindeer (FCI, AKC standard, UKC, RKC, AKC page).

Breed clubFCI Standard No. 189, 2016

Stock worked, not game. Reindeer are not as fearful of dogs and wolves as many herd animals (AKC standard).

Also used on

AKC page: in ancient times the Sami used the Lapphund for hunting reindeer over barren tundra, and the dog kept its duties as hunting dog, guard and close companion after it moved to herding. RKC: guard of the reindeer herd as well as herder. FCI: watch dog. Wikipedia: in Finland only the Finnish Lapphund and the Lapponian Herder may legally be kennelled outdoors in winter; the Lapponian Herder (shorter coat) became favoured with the snowmobile.

Search pattern

AKC standard: reindeer are not as fearful of dogs as other herd animals, so the breed has a basic need both to control and to get away from them; at work the dogs are extremely active and noisy, constantly on the watch because a reindeer may turn and try to trample them, with a very strong startle reflex from which they recover quickly and return to work. FCI: agile and fast when working. AKC standard gait: agile, capable of sudden bursts of speed. UKC: natural herding instincts and a tendency to bark. Single dog or team work is not stated by any source read.

Breed clubAKC breed standard, 2008

Style: loose, noisy control of a herd that can fight back; no source describes a gather, drive or tend pattern in sheepdog terms.

Field trial standard

FCI: classified Group 5, Section 3.4 Nordic Watchdogs and Herders, without working trial. AKC page: many Lappies enjoy herding trials; also agility, obedience, rally and tracking. Wikipedia: herding instincts and trainability can be measured at non-competitive herding tests, and dogs with basic instincts can be trained for herding trials. The AKC herding test and trial rules themselves were not read.

How to read this page

Every value carries a label. Measured means peer-reviewed data on many dogs. Studied means peer-reviewed, smaller or indirect. Breed club means a club or registry states it. Editorial means expert opinion with no measurement behind it. Where two good sources disagree, both are shown and neither is averaged.

Published when the entry rests on the best information available from no fewer than three independent sources, checked by a second pass that did not write it. 7 sources on this page. Found something wrong? Tell us and the correction is logged with its date.
