Breed sets the odds. The parents set the dog. Every number here shows its source, its spread and how sure we are. Nothing on this page is a prediction about one dog.

The body

What the breed is built like. Registry standards give an ideal, not a range.

Height at the shoulder

24.4 to 27.6 in

Breed clubFédération Cynologique Internationale, 1982

Low and high span FCI and UKC printed ranges without tolerance (24.4 in FCI to 27.6 in FCI; UKC 24.5 to 27.5 sits inside). Both standards print one range for the two sexes. No center.

Coat

FCI 316: short and fine. Colour white-lemon or white and orange, on condition that the orange is not too dark, going on to red; black or red hair is a fault. Skin white with yellow or orange markings; palate can be yellow. UKC: short and fine; white and lemon, or white and orange, but the orange may not be so dark as to appear red.

Role

FCI 316 utilization: scenthound (Group 6, Section 1.1 large-sized hounds, with working trial); typical French hound, distinguished, rustic. UKC: a typical, rustic, distinguished French hound (no use stated). Wikipedia (en): hunted in packs; descends from the old Hound of Saintonge. Breed clubFédération Cynologique Internationale, 1982

The FCI utilization line says only 'scenthound' (no pack-hound-for-big-game wording as in FCI 219 and 220). Wikipedia (fr) calls the breed of recent creation and very rare, present only in metropolitan France, and says the Billy was probably used to create it; Wikipedia (en) says it descends from the Saintonge hound. Editorial views are shown beside the standard, labelled; where they disagree both stand (Chad, Oct 8 2026).

Primary game

Wikipedia (fr): mainly used for stag (cerf) battues. Wikipedia (en): hunted in packs, no quarry named. FCI 316 and UKC: no quarry stated.

EditorialWikipédia (French)

Single editorial source for the quarry, backed by no registry text. Editorial views are shown beside the standard, labelled; where they disagree both stand (Chad, Oct 8 2026).

Search pattern

Wikipedia (fr): a fine voice, excellent scent, courageous, active, great endurance. Wikipedia (en): noted for perseverance, a good nose and voice (the same sentence as the Blanc et Noir article); unusually friendly and easy to manage for a pack dog; pack-hunted under the direction of a human. FCI 316 gait: rather easy, a light and sustained gallop. UKC: gait rather easy, light and sustained.

EditorialWikipédia (French)

Wikipedia (en) uses the same words for this breed and for the Blanc et Noir; treat the two as one editorial statement. No source describes the voice itself (pitch, open or mute) or single-hound work. Editorial views are shown beside the standard, labelled; where they disagree both stand (Chad, Oct 8 2026).

Field trial standard

FCI 316 classification: Group 6, Section 1.1 large-sized hounds, 'with working trial' (a working trial is part of the FCI classification). The trial rules themselves were not read.

How to read this page

Every value carries a label. Measured means peer-reviewed data on many dogs. Studied means peer-reviewed, smaller or indirect. Breed club means a club or registry states it. Editorial means expert opinion with no measurement behind it. Where two good sources disagree, both are shown and neither is averaged.

Published when the entry rests on the best information available from no fewer than three independent sources, checked by a second pass that did not write it. 2 sources on this page. Found something wrong? Tell us and the correction is logged with its date.
