AKC Non-Sporting · UKC Companion · FCI standard 101
French Bulldog.
Companion: the standard describes well behaved, adaptable and comfortable companions with an affectionate nature and even disposition, generally active, alert and playful but not unduly boisterous. Descended from the toy Bulldogs that Nottingham lace workers took to northern France in the 1850s (UK registry history).
Breed sets the odds. The parents set the dog. Every number here shows its source, its spread and how sure we are. Nothing on this page is a prediction about one dog.
The body
What the breed is built like. Registry standards give an ideal, not a range.
Height at the shoulder
The standard sets no height (it governs proportion and a weight limit); this is the registry breed page's typical band. Center is its midpoint.
Weight
Low and high are the study's interquartile range, not a standard range. The adult weights of breeding stock fall under the standard's 28 lb ceiling; the UK primary-care population plainly straddles it.
Coat
Shedding
Heat tolerance
The coat is short and smooth, which alone would score 5; the scale's bottom tier is reserved for a short muzzle, and the heat-illness and airway evidence puts the breed there regardless of coat. VetCompass 2021: French Bulldogs had 30.89 times the odds of brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (95% CI 20.91-45.64) and 42.14 times the odds of stenotic nares of other dogs. The breed rescue states the dogs overheat quickly because of their extremely short noses and inability to cool the air they breathe.
How long they live, and what they costSources differ
Two numbers, two measures. Median lifespan: in a large sample of this breed, the age by which half had died; read it as the typical lifespan (UK, 2024, 584,734 dogs). Life expectancy at birth: how many years a newborn of this breed is expected to live, worked from the death rates at every age in UK veterinary records, the same life-table method used for people (VetCompass, 2022). It runs lower because every early death pulls the average down and because it comes from clinics, not registries. KENAI leads with the median and shows the other beside it. Neither is averaged.
Median lifespan
Life expectancy at birth
Sources differ with median_lifespan_yr: a different measure and a different sample; both shown, never averaged. The authors warn this figure is pulled down by the breed's soaring popularity (UK Kennel Club registrations rose from 2,771 in 2011 to 39,266 in 2020), which biases the sample toward young dogs whose deaths weigh heavily in a hypothetical cohort life table, and by a relatively small sample (n = 232); they say the variation may be partly attributable to that popularity rather than to health alone. Read from Table 3 on the PMC copy (PMC9050668).
What it costs
The figure is an average per claim, not a lifetime total, from one insurer's quarterly release of its own internal claims data (Embrace, Q2 2025). Insured dogs are a self-selected population, so the figure describes Embrace's policyholders, not the breed.
The dog at home
What the breed asks of a day. The first thing most homes get wrong.
Exercise need
RKC band mapped: up to 1 hour = 60. The breed rescue advises exercising only in cool morning or evening hours.
Exercise need
Energy
AKC breed page trait score, 1 to 5: a breed-club tendency, never a measurement.
Grooming load
RKC band mapped: weekly brush = 2. Skin folds need separate attention: skin fold dermatitis is among the breed's most common disorders.

Why they get given up
One rescue's statement, not a count. Single editorial source.
The work
What it was built to do in the field, and what a test or trial asks of it.
Role
Not a gun dog or a working breed; hunting-specific traits are omitted.
How common the problems are
Evaluated dogs skew toward breeding stock; the numbers are still the best there are.
Hip dysplasia
Voluntary registry: affected dogs are under-reported and evaluated dogs skew toward breeding stock, so true prevalence is higher. The 2021-23 birth-year hip columns are carried in the OFA statistics service's data but are not displayed on the rendered page.
Elbow dysplasia
Same voluntary-registry caveat as hips. OFA patella: 6.7% abnormal of 9,007 evaluations (grade 1 4.9%, grade 2 1.4%, grade 3 0.3%), rank 20. OFA tracheal hypoplasia: 1.0% abnormal and 1.7% equivocal of 2,491. OFA chondrodystrophy (CDDY/IVDD) DNA: of 255 tested, 61.6% carried two copies, 32.5% one, 5.9% none. OFA BAER hearing: 1.8% abnormal and 0.4% equivocal of 278 (the service reports normal, equivocal and abnormal; it does not split unilateral from bilateral deafness).
Most common disorders
VetCompass primary-care records on a very young population; the authors expect the profile to shift as the cohort ages. The 2021 VetCompass comparison (2,781 French Bulldogs vs 21,850 other dogs, 2016) found higher odds of 20 of 43 common disorders, led by stenotic nares (OR 42.14), brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (OR 30.89), aural discharge (OR 14.40), skin fold dermatitis (OR 11.18) and dystocia (OR 9.13). The UK Kennel Club 2014 owner survey (Wiles 2017; 330 live dogs, median age 1.81 yr, 37.0% with a condition) ranked allergic skin disorder 4.85%, BOAS 4.85%, otitis media 3.64%, persistent vomiting 3.03%, patellar luxation 2.73%, intervertebral disc disorder 2.73%.

How to read this page
Every value carries a label. Measured means peer-reviewed data on many dogs. Studied means peer-reviewed, smaller or indirect. Breed club means a club or registry states it. Editorial means expert opinion with no measurement behind it. Where two good sources disagree, both are shown and neither is averaged.
Published when the entry rests on the best information available from no fewer than three independent sources, checked by a second pass that did not write it. 13 sources on this page. Found something wrong? Tell us and the correction is logged with its date.
