Giant Schnauzer.

FCI 181 utilization: utility and companion dog; originally used in Southern Germany to drive cattle; officially recognised as a working dog in 1925. RKC: once the Munich Schnauzer, developed around Munich by cattle farmers who wanted a strong drover from the Standard Schnauzer plus Rottweiler, Great Dane, sheepdogs and perhaps Bouvier; when livestock moved by train it turned to city guarding, police work and tracking. UKC: developed in the 1600s as a drover of sheep and cattle and a guard dog; unknown outside Germany until World War I police training. Wikipedia: guarded breweries, butchers' shops, stockyards and factories in Bavaria; military dog in both World Wars; used in Schutzhund, police work and nosework..

The dog at home

What the breed asks of a day. The first thing most homes get wrong.

Exercise need

RKC: more than 2 hours per day; large house, large garden; town or country.

RKC is a UK registry band, not a study; mapped by the library rule (more than 2 hours = 150).

Exercise need

How common the problems are

Evaluated dogs skew toward breeding stock; the numbers are still the best there are.

Hip dysplasia

17.5% · 5,915 OFA hip evaluations, current all-data, accessed Oct 8 2026; 17.5% dysplastic (mild 12.1, moderate 4.9, severe 0.6), 81.1% normal. OFA rank 68.

Most common disorders

Wikipedia: hip and elbow dysplasia common; eye disease (keratoconjunctivitis sicca, glaucoma, cataracts, multifocal retinal dysplasia, generalized PRA); skin disease (seasonal flank alopecia, vitiligo, follicular cysts); skin cancer in dark dogs (melanoma of digits, squamous cell carcinoma); central diabetes insipidus, autosomal recessive hypothyroidism, cobalamin malabsorption, narcolepsy-cataplexy and seizure disorders in some; sensitivity to sulphonamides and gold. A Kennel Club survey: lymphoma and liver cancer were the most common causes of death, then heart attacks and heart failure. RKC health schemes: elbow and hip scoring, prcd-PRA DNA test (good practice); DCM, PRA5, eye scheme and hyperuricosuria (best practice).

How to read this page

Every value carries a label. Measured means peer-reviewed data on many dogs. Studied means peer-reviewed, smaller or indirect. Breed club means a club or registry states it. Editorial means expert opinion with no measurement behind it. Where two good sources disagree, both are shown and neither is averaged.

Published when the entry rests on the best information available from no fewer than three independent sources, checked by a second pass that did not write it. 8 sources on this page. Found something wrong? Tell us and the correction is logged with its date.
