Breed sets the odds. The parents set the dog. Every number here shows its source, its spread and how sure we are. Nothing on this page is a prediction about one dog.

The body

What the breed is built like. Registry standards give an ideal, not a range.

Height at the shoulder

13 to 16 in

Breed clubUnited Kennel Club

UKC, FCI and the AKC page agree. UKC explains the limits: not too large to enter a burrow, nor too small to defend itself. Wikipedia (US) adds that for underground work in the US a dog needs to be at the smallest end of the standard or undersized.

Weight

16 to 22 lb

Breed clubUnited Kennel Club

Span of UKC and the AKC page. The Wikipedia sex split is attributed to an older FCI text; the current FCI standard read prints no weight. Left as a both-sex row because no registry read splits the weight by sex.

Coat

UKC: smooth or harsh, or any texture between; thick and abundant to turn briars, dampness and cold. FCI 103: plain, dense; hard rough hair or coarse smooth hair. Color: black, dark brown or greyish-black with yellow-red markings; small white on chest and toes tolerated. AKC page: coat grooming frequency 1 of 5, shedding 2 of 5 (AKC bands). Wikipedia: all varieties shed.

Breed clubUnited Kennel Club

UKC and FCI agree. AKC bands are not mapped to the library scale.

DerivedUnited Kennel Club

Derived from the standard's coat (short, dense, hard, single-type working coat = 4). No measured data.

What the breed asks of a day. The first thing most homes get wrong.

Exercise need

AKC page energy level 3 of 5 and mental stimulation needs 4 of 5 (AKC bands). UKC: combustible energy; should not be selected strictly as a pet. Not converted to minutes.

Breed clubAKC

No Royal Kennel Club page (the breed is not in the RKC A to Z that was checked), so no minutes figure. Left as text; the band is not mapped to minutes.

Breed clubFCI-Standard N° 103, 2015

FCI, UKC and DJT-Club wording. The DJT-Club says only an active hunter can give the dog a suitable life and places its dogs with active hunters.

Primary game

UKC: wild boar, badger, fox and weasel in Germany; imports to the US and Canada also used as tree dogs, primarily for raccoon and squirrel. DJT-Club: wild boar and all hoofed game (flushing), small game, and wild fowl and rabbit, pheasant, partridge and pigeon (retrieving). Wikipedia: badger, fox and raccoon underground; drives wild boar and rabbits from thickets; blood-tracks wounded deer.

Also used on

DJT-Club (translated): flushing as a solo hunter (slipped from a stand or accompanying the handler), in the DJT group or with other breeds; water work (persistent flushing in reeds before the shot, reliable retrieving of waterfowl after the shot); retrieving rabbit, pheasant, partridge and pigeon; blood-track work (leash tracking, bay-and-hold, 'Hetze und Stellen'); den work. UKC adds raccoon and squirrel as tree-dog work in North America.

Search pattern

DJT-Club breeding goal: concentrate on hardness (Härte), nose, giving tongue on the trail (Spurlaut), love of water, trainability, steadiness of character (gun steadiness, standing quiet, sociability), size, color, coat, teeth and health. The club defines 'Schärfe' as the dog putting all its energy into the pursuit of game and seizing it at the end, and says it has nothing to do with biting people or dogs; it calls hardness indispensable for earth work and for wild boar. FCI 103: tongue-giving ('spurlaut') and water-happy.

Field trial standard

FCI 103 classifies the breed Group 3, Section 1 'with working trial'. DJT-Club: its regional groups run breeding tests, utility tests, association blood-track tests (Verbandsschweißprüfungen) and association flushing tests (Verbandsstöberprüfungen). No test scoring read.

Water work

FCI 103: bred to be water-happy. DJT-Club: water work before the shot by persistent flushing in reeds, after the shot by reliably retrieving waterfowl. UKC: no water statement. Wikipedia (US lines): reports of offspring being exceptional flush and retrieval dogs on land and in water.

How to read this page

Every value carries a label. Measured means peer-reviewed data on many dogs. Studied means peer-reviewed, smaller or indirect. Breed club means a club or registry states it. Editorial means expert opinion with no measurement behind it. Where two good sources disagree, both are shown and neither is averaged.

Published when the entry rests on the best information available from no fewer than three independent sources, checked by a second pass that did not write it. 5 sources on this page. Found something wrong? Tell us and the correction is logged with its date.
