JCCA: 'Chin are very sensitive to heat and humidity' and 'all brachycephalic breeds have a tendency towards various eye issues'; the club asks owners to supply 'plenty of ventilation and fresh water during warm weather'. Derived: profuse coat plus a short flat face = 1 on the rubric. The JCCA and the RKC test notice state the brachycephaly and heat sensitivity plainly; the standards describe the short muzzle.

How common the problems are

Evaluated dogs skew toward breeding stock; the numbers are still the best there are.

Most common disorders

JCCA health recommendations name four areas of concern: eyes (more common in the breed: distichiasis, dry eye, corneal endothelial degeneration, cataracts), patellas ('toy dogs have a tendency'), heart (the club is 'looking into' Chin-specific research) and GM2 gangliosidosis, a recessive inherited disease with a one-time saliva test; affected dogs are normal at first and around 1 to 1.5 years become dull and unsteady. JCCA FAQ: reverse sneezing and 'snizzling' because of the flat face, usually harmless; a harness is advised over a collar for fragile small-dog tracheas. Wikipedia: luxating patellas, cataracts and early-onset heart murmurs. RKC: eye scheme, and a breathing (BOAS) grading test newly recognised Aug 2026.

How to read this page

Every value carries a label. Measured means peer-reviewed data on many dogs. Studied means peer-reviewed, smaller or indirect. Breed club means a club or registry states it. Editorial means expert opinion with no measurement behind it. Where two good sources disagree, both are shown and neither is averaged.

Published when the entry rests on the best information available from no fewer than three independent sources, checked by a second pass that did not write it. 7 sources on this page. Found something wrong? Tell us and the correction is logged with its date.
