Also used on

National Geographic: wildlife-management bear shepherding. Wildlife officers trap a nuisance bear, then dogs bark at it and, on release, track it and nip at its heels until called off, so the bear learns the place is not safe; the Wind River Bear Institute (Florence, Montana) breeds, trains and contracts the dogs out to agencies. UKC History: the Komi dog is the ancestor; originally used by Russian and Finnish peasants. FCI history: the breed was formed in 1936 to create a sturdy dog that barks at big game; basic stock was used for all types of game hunting.

Search pattern

FCI: independent, yet works co-operatively to the game, marking game by barking; very good sense of direction; moves light and effortless, covering a lot of ground. UKC: normally aggressive with other dogs, particularly in their own territory, so they do not work well in a pack; hunts silent until the game is stopped or treed. National Geographic (bear work): the dogs track the bear, bark at it and nip at its heels until called back. AKC page: Barking Level 3 of 5.

Breed clubFederation Cynologique Internationale, 2015

UKC states silent search with barking only at bay or tree; FCI states barking marks the game. Both stand. Editorial views are shown beside the standard, labelled; where they disagree both stand (Chad, Oct 8 2026).
