FCI 3 utilization: the hard job of tackling otters in deep waters, engaging badger underground and hunting vermin; also a good watch dog and loyal companion. RKC: used to cull rats and adept in hunting in rivers to kill otter. UKC: one of three long-legged Irish terriers, developed by crofters as all-purpose farm dogs for herding, guarding, hunting, retrieving and vermin control; used for nearly every canine job including police and military work. Wikipedia: bred to control vermin including rats, rabbits, badgers, ferrets, foxes, otters, hares, deer and even wolves, later a general working dog herding cattle and sheep..

Breed clubFCI-Standard N° 3

FCI and RKC agree on otter and badger. The Wikipedia quarry list (hares, deer, wolves) is broader than any registry text and is editorial.

Field trial standard

FCI 3 history: between 1922 and 1924 the Irish clubs sponsored six shows and six field trials. Wikipedia: the Irish Kennel Club required a 'gameness' test, the Teastas Mor, before a Kerry could be judged; it included catching rabbits and bringing a badger to bay in its set. AKC Earthdog eligible-breeds page (read Oct 8 2026) does NOT list the Kerry Blue Terrier. FCI 3: Group 3, Section 1 large and medium-sized terriers, without working trial.

Breed clubFCI-Standard N° 3

The Teastas Mor line is Wikipedia (editorial); the field-trial dates are the FCI's. No current test scoring read.

Water work

Editorial means expert opinion with no measurement behind it. Where two good sources disagree, both are shown and neither is averaged.

Published when the entry rests on the best information available from no fewer than three independent sources, checked by a second pass that did not write it. 8 sources on this page. Found something wrong? Tell us and the correction is logged with its date.
