FCI 226 utilization: guard dog, companion (Group 2, Section 2.2 Molossoid breeds, Mountain type, without working trial); origin Germany and Switzerland. Dogs Victoria: a gentle, loyal, playful and confident family dog needing training and socialising; Swiss and German breeders took the breed seriously from about 1900. Dogs NSW: very attached to its family, there only for its family; originally helped fishermen off Newfoundland, pulling nets and boats. Wikipedia: a black-and-white descendant of the Newfoundland recognized as an independent breed in continental Europe; breed club for the tall Landseer-coloured dogs formed in Germany in 1960..

Breed sets the odds. The parents set the dog. Every number here shows its source, its spread and how sure we are. Nothing on this page is a prediction about one dog.

Coat

FCI 226: top coat long, as straight and dense as possible, soft to the touch, good undercoat not as dense as the black Newfoundland's; slightly wavy on back and hindquarters not objectionable; main colour clear white with distinct black patches on body and croup, head black with a white symmetrical blaze; ticking in the white not penalized. Dogs Victoria: double coat with a thick undercoat. Dogs NSW: thick, oily undercoat; topcoat long, straight and soft.

The dog at home

What the breed asks of a day. The first thing most homes get wrong.

Exercise need

Dogs Victoria: needs plenty of space to run and exercise and does not thrive when left alone for long periods. Dogs NSW: lively temperament, loves to learn, loves to run and is desperate for walks; a fenced yard is advised and kennel living is called totally inappropriate.

Role

FCI 226 utilization: guard dog, companion (Group 2, Section 2.2 Molossoid breeds, Mountain type, without working trial); origin Germany and Switzerland. Not a gun dog; no game traits recorded. In Britain and North America Landseer-coloured dogs are a Newfoundland variety (Wikipedia), a different registry population.

Also used on

Dogs NSW: learns very easily to pull a little wagon or sled and to carry a shopping basket home; these are family anecdotes, not a registry-defined use.

Water work

Dogs NSW: loves to swim and play in the water, 'where, and whenever possible'; the breed's early work was in the water with Newfoundland fishermen. FCI 226: webbed toes on all four feet.

Breed clubDogs NSW

No water-work program or test was found for the ECT.

Cold water

3 of 5 · FCI 226: toes connected by webbing on all four feet, strong and almost reaching the tips of the toes; undercoat good but not as dense as the Newfoundland's. Dogs NSW: the dog's ultimate pleasure is to swim and play in the water. Wikipedia: descended from Newfoundland fishermen's dogs.

DerivedFederation Cynologique Internationale, 1997

Derived from the webbed feet, the long double coat and the stated love of water; set below a full Newfoundland coat because the FCI undercoat is lighter. No cold-water work is documented in any source read.

How common the problems are

Evaluated dogs skew toward breeding stock; the numbers are still the best there are.

Most common disorders

Dogs Victoria: generally a healthy breed; conditions that may occur include hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia and bloat; ask breeders what health testing they do. Wikipedia: a 2015 study found a nonsense variant in the COL6A1 gene in Landseers with muscular dystrophy (a model for human Ullrich congenital muscular dystrophy).

How to read this page

Every value carries a label. Measured means peer-reviewed data on many dogs. Studied means peer-reviewed, smaller or indirect. Breed club means a club or registry states it. Editorial means expert opinion with no measurement behind it. Where two good sources disagree, both are shown and neither is averaged.

Published when the entry rests on the best information available from no fewer than three independent sources, checked by a second pass that did not write it. 4 sources on this page. Found something wrong? Tell us and the correction is logged with its date.
