Lapponian Herder.

FCI 284 utilization: reindeer herder; Group 5 Spitz and primitive types, Section 3 Nordic Watchdogs and Herders, 'Without working trial'. FCI history: for hundreds of years the Lapps have used dogs of this type as reindeer herders; acceptance to the breed register began in the 1950s, when the modern Finnish Lapphund and the Lapponian Herder were still one breed; the Lapponian Herder became its own breed on 10.12.1966. FCI temperament: docile, calm, friendly, energetic and willing to work; barks readily when working. UKC (Herding Dog Group): the same history and temperament, 'barks freely when working'; recognized by UKC July 1, 2006. Peer-reviewed (PMC11226788): the three Lapphund breeds (Swedish Lapphund, Finnish Lapphund, Lapponian Herder) originate from dogs used by the Sami primarily for reindeer herding. Peer-reviewed (PMC6025854): the reindeer-herding Lapphund and Lapponian Herder are closely related to the Finnish Spitz, Nordic Spitz and Karelian Bear Dog, with common origins with northeastern Eurasian Laika breeds.

Breed sets the odds. The parents set the dog. Every number here shows its source, its spread and how sure we are. Nothing on this page is a prediction about one dog.

The body

What the breed is built like. Registry standards give an ideal, not a range.

Height at the shoulder

dogs 18 to 21.3 in · bitches 16.9 to 20 in

Breed clubFederation Cynologique Internationale, 2026

Low and high span all three; the AKC breed-wide band counts in both sex rows. Two slightly different ideals (FCI 18.1, UKC 18), so center is blank.

Weight

dogs 70 lb · bitches 70 lb

Breed clubAKC

The AKC page prints one figure, 70 lb, for both sexes (no range), so it sits as the center; FCI 284 and UKC print no weight. A single AKC header figure, flagged thin.

Coat

FCI 284: outer coat of medium length or long, straight, rather erect and harsh; undercoat fine and dense; more profuse and longer on neck, chest and back of thighs. Colour black in different shades, even greyish or dark brown with a lighter shade, greyish or brownish markings often on head, lower body and legs; white markings may appear on neck, chest and legs. Blue, sable and fawn are disqualifying; lacking undercoat and soft, wavy or lying coat are faults. UKC: black, gray or dark brown with lighter shadings, white markings on neck, chest and legs permitted

Not the Finnish Lapphund (Suomenlapinkoira) or the Swedish Lapphund, which are separate breeds. No source read states how the dogs work reindeer (gathering, driving) beyond the barking.

How common the problems are

Evaluated dogs skew toward breeding stock; the numbers are still the best there are.

Most common disorders

Pituitary dwarfism: a Helsinki study of a splice variant in POU1F1 (identified in Karelian Bear Dog dwarfs) found it at low frequency in Lapponian Herders: 8 of 263 genotyped Lapponian Herders were heterozygous carriers, none homozygous. AKC editorial: the pituitary dwarfism mutation seen in the German Shepherd Dog may also be seen in the Lapponian Herder and the White Swiss Shepherd Dog

StudiedIntronic variant in POU1F1 associated with canine pituitary dwarfism (PMC8519942): Karelian Bear Dog dwarfism; 263 Lapponian Herders genotyped

The Lapponian Herder carrier count is from a study aimed at the Karelian Bear Dog, using Lapponian Herders as a related breed; not a breed health survey. The AKC statement is general editorial.

How to read this page

Every value carries a label. Measured means peer-reviewed data on many dogs. Studied means peer-reviewed, smaller or indirect. Breed club means a club or registry states it. Editorial means expert opinion with no measurement behind it. Where two good sources disagree, both are shown and neither is averaged.

Published when the entry rests on the best information available from no fewer than three independent sources, checked by a second pass that did not write it. 3 sources on this page. Found something wrong? Tell us and the correction is logged with its date.
