Miniature Pinscher.
AKC standard: a well-balanced, sturdy, compact, short-coupled, smooth-coated dog; 'fearless animation, complete self-possession, and spirited presence'; hackney-like action. UKC: proud, vigorous, alert; theory that it was developed from the German Pinscher with Dachshunds and Italian Greyhounds. FCI 185: utilisation house and companion dog; 'a reduced image of the German Pinscher'; lively, spirited, self-assured. RKC: a miniaturised version of the Pinscher, used for vermin control; originally also a ratter, now a family companion; the US and UK hackney action differs from the country-of-origin standard. MPCA: historians agree it originated in Germany several centuries ago as an efficient barnyard ratter; it is part of the German Pinscher family, and 'pinscher' names a method of working (jumping on and biting quarry), not a heritage. MPCA and Wikipedia both state the 'miniature Doberman' idea is a misconception: Louis Dobermann bred his first Dobermans in 1890, long after Miniature Pinschers were being produced in Germany, and the early AKC wording 'a miniature of the Doberman Pinscher' (1935, removed in the 1950 revision) fed the error..
Breed sets the odds. The parents set the dog. Every number here shows its source, its spread and how sure we are. Nothing on this page is a prediction about one dog.
The body
What the breed is built like. Registry standards give an ideal, not a range.
Height at the shoulder
Low and high span AKC, UKC and FCI. The AKC prints the desired height as a range (11 to 11.5), so center is blank.
Weight
Low and high span the AKC page and FCI. Only the AKC page and FCI print numbers.
Coat
Shedding
AKC breed page trait score, 1 to 5: a breed-club tendency, never a measurement.
Heat tolerance
Derived from the standard's coat (short, smooth, single = 5). No measured data. Wikipedia's cold-weather line is the reverse side of the same coat.
How long they live, and what they cost
Measured on real dogs, with the sample and the spread. Never a guess.
Median lifespan
McMillan et al. 2024 / Dogs Trust table. UK population; median across dogs that had died plus censored dogs per the paper's method.
The dog at home
What the breed asks of a day. The first thing most homes get wrong.
Exercise need
RKC is a UK registry band, not a study; mapped by the library rule.
Exercise need
AKC bands are not a study; Wikipedia is editorial.
Energy
AKC breed page trait score, 1 to 5: a breed-club tendency, never a measurement.
Grooming load
RKC is a UK registry band; mapped by the library rule.
The work
What it was built to do in the field, and what a test or trial asks of it.
Role
Registry standards, RKC, the parent club and Wikipedia agree on the ratter origin; Wikipedia and the MPCA state the Doberman point, the standards do not.
Primary game
The parent club and RKC state ratting; the wider list is Wikipedia (editorial).
Also used on
Wikipedia is editorial; no registry source lists other quarry.
Field trial standard
AKC eligibility page and FCI classification; no pass rates read.
How common the problems are
Evaluated dogs skew toward breeding stock; the numbers are still the best there are.
Hip dysplasia
OFA's own breed statistics. OFA-evaluated dogs skew toward breeding stock, with normal results over-represented. Hips rank 211 in OFA's table.
More
akc bands
Fourteen AKC bands in one row; the selector reads each by name. Breed-club ratings: a tendency, never a measurement.
What to ask a breeder for
The health clearances the breed’s own club and registry name. Reference only: what to ask for, never a statement about any dog’s health.

How to read this page
Every value carries a label. Measured means peer-reviewed data on many dogs. Studied means peer-reviewed, smaller or indirect. Breed club means a club or registry states it. Editorial means expert opinion with no measurement behind it. Where two good sources disagree, both are shown and neither is averaged.
Published when the entry rests on the best information available from no fewer than three independent sources, checked by a second pass that did not write it. 8 sources on this page. Found something wrong? Tell us and the correction is logged with its date.
