Breed sets the odds. The parents set the dog. Every number here shows its source, its spread and how sure we are. Nothing on this page is a prediction about one dog.

The lines

Within one breed the line can matter more than the breed. Where the lines differ, the page says which one a value belongs to.

f1

F1: a purebred Newfoundland crossed with a purebred Poodle, the first generation. No source read measures this cross, so the line carries no figure of its own.

f1b

F1b: an F1 Newfypoo bred back to a Poodle, the usual definition of the backcross; confirm with the breeder which parent breed was used.

multigen

Multigen: later crosses between Newfypoos, F2 and beyond; no source read measures how traits vary across these generations.

The body

What the breed is built like. Registry standards give an ideal, not a range.

Height at the shoulder

22 to 28 in

DerivedAKC breed standard, 1990

Derived from both parents' standards; a Standard Poodle parent is assumed; crosses to other Poodle sizes run larger or smaller and no figure is derived for them. Low is the lower of the two parents' lows, high the higher of the two highs. No center: the Newfoundland standard prints a separate average for each sex, so the parents do not share one center row. Mini and toy crosses run smaller and no figure is derived for them. Also cited: poo_pca_sizes.

Weight

dogs 60 to 176 lb · bitches 40 to 143 lb

DerivedAKC breed standard, 1990

Derived from both parents' weight bands; a Standard Poodle parent is assumed; crosses to other Poodle sizes run larger or smaller and no figure is derived for them. No center: the Newfoundland entry prints no single ideal weight, and a midpoint of its range would be our arithmetic, not a source. Also cited: poo_akc_page_std.

Heat tolerance

2 of 5 · Parents differ: Newfoundland 2 (flat, water-resistant double coat with a soft dense undercoat); Poodle 3 (dense curly coat, kept clipped). The coat a given dog inherits, and the clip it is kept in, sets where it sits

DerivedAKC breed standard, 1990

Derived from both parents' coat descriptions (no center because the parents disagree). No cited source says how furnishings or curl are inherited. Also cited: poo_akc_std.

The dog at home

What the breed asks of a day. The first thing most homes get wrong.

Exercise need

Both parents sit at up to 1 hour a day: Newfoundland up to 1 hour (RKC band); Poodle up to 1 hour (RKC band)

DerivedThe Royal Kennel Club

Derived from both parents' RKC bands; the centers agree, so 60 is recorded. Also cited: poo_rkc_std.

Grooming load

4 of 5 · Both parents sit at every day (4, RKC band): Newfoundland every day, medium coat, sheds; Poodle regular clipping and grooming. Shedding differs between the parents in the RKC pages

DerivedThe Royal Kennel Club

Derived from both parents' RKC grooming bands; the parents agree on 4. No cited source says how furnishings or curl are inherited. Also cited: poo_rkc_std.

What to ask a breeder for

How to read this page

Every value carries a label. Measured means peer-reviewed data on many dogs. Studied means peer-reviewed, smaller or indirect. Breed club means a club or registry states it. Editorial means expert opinion with no measurement behind it. Where two good sources disagree, both are shown and neither is averaged.

Published when the entry rests on the best information available from no fewer than three independent sources, checked by a second pass that did not write it. 6 sources on this page. Found something wrong? Tell us and the correction is logged with its date.
