Podenco Canario.

FCI 329: used for rabbit hunting, adapting to irregular terrain with his nose, sight and hearing; capable of hunting from dawn to nightfall. With nose and hearing he finds rabbits at the bottom of natural crevices, cracks in walls, heaps of stones at the edges of ploughed fields, volcanic tubes and thorny bushes. He is mainly a tracker. Also used combined with the ferret, a method authorised on the islands. UKC: hunts rabbits and ferrets by sight, scent and sound. Wikipedia: used principally for rabbit but may hunt other small or larger game..

Breed sets the odds. The parents set the dog. Every number here shows its source, its spread and how sure we are. Nothing on this page is a prediction about one dog.

UKC and FCI figures stated side by side; no standard prints an ideal.

Coat

FCI 329 and UKC: smooth, short and dense. Color: any combination of red and white, the red from orange to mahogany (FCI prefers red and white). Wikipedia: red, white or a combination depending on the island; nose, nails and skin should be a shade of red and the dog is known to blush when excited; also describes brown (chocolate) or yellow coats with white, brown or tan markings, which the standards do not list.

Search pattern

FCI 329: mainly a tracker dog who must neither bark nor catch the game during his scenting work; he usually takes the rabbit in his mouth. Wikipedia: when pursuing prey he emits a characteristic staccato repetitive bark known to some local hunters as 'the song of the rabbit' (marked citation needed), and shows hunting instinct from about 3 months, taking up to 14 months to develop. FCI says not to bark; Wikipedia says he barks on the chase; both stand.

FCI and Wikipedia disagree on voice and are both shown. Single or pack work is not stated.

Field trial standard

FCI 329 text on the FCI PDF: Group 5 Section 7 (primitive type, hunting dogs), without working trial. The RSCE copy of the same standard prints 'Subject to a working trial'. The two stand side by side.

Disagreement between the FCI PDF and the RSCE copy is recorded as printed.

How common the problems are

Evaluated dogs skew toward breeding stock; the numbers are still the best there are.

Most common disorders

Wikipedia: a sexual-development genetic disorder (testicular / ovotesticular disorder, formerly called SRY-negative XX sex reversal) was observed in one dog of the breed.

How to read this page

Every value carries a label. Measured means peer-reviewed data on many dogs. Studied means peer-reviewed, smaller or indirect. Breed club means a club or registry states it. Editorial means expert opinion with no measurement behind it. Where two good sources disagree, both are shown and neither is averaged.

Published when the entry rests on the best information available from no fewer than three independent sources, checked by a second pass that did not write it. 2 sources on this page. Found something wrong? Tell us and the correction is logged with its date.
