Pomeranian.

FCI 97 utilization: watch and companion dog (the Toy Spitz/Pomeranian is the ideal companion, family and watch dog for house and apartment). AKC standard: a compact, active toy dog of Nordic descent, a great companion and show dog. UKC: the smallest of the Northern Breeds; originally much larger (up to 30 lb) and used as herding and working dogs; the small size came from undersized pups. Royal Kennel Club: bred down from the German Spitz; a favourite of Queen Victoria. Wikipedia: toy companion descended from the German Spitz..

The body

What the breed is built like. Registry standards give an ideal, not a range.

Height at the shoulder

8.3 in (6 to 9.4)

Breed clubFederation Cynologique Internationale, 2024

Center is the FCI printed ideal (21 cm). Low is the AKC page's 6 in, high the FCI's 24 cm. Wikipedia's 8 to 14 in and 7 to 12 in sit well above the FCI maximum and the AKC page and read as errors (Oct 9 amendment): shown in the text, labelled, and kept out of low/high.

Weight

3 to 7 lb

Breed clubAKC breed standard, 2011

The standards print the ideal as a range (AKC 4 to 6, UKC 4 to 5), so no single center is set.

Coat

AKC: double coat, short dense undercoat with long harsh-textured guard hair standing off the body; ruff framing the head, forelegs feathered, heavy skirt on thighs and hind legs, plume tail; head and leg coat shorter; females may carry less coat; trimming for neatness and a clean outline permitted; all colours and patterns judged equally. FCI 97: long, straight, firm standing-off top coat over a short, thick, cotton-wool undercoat, not to look modelled; white, black, brown, orange, grey-shaded, other colours. UKC: soft dense undercoat, harsh glistening outer coat; shown as naturally as possible. Royal Kennel Club: coat length medium; sheds.

How common the problems are

Evaluated dogs skew toward breeding stock; the numbers are still the best there are.

Hip dysplasia

18.7% · OFA all-data: 412 evaluations, 18.7% dysplastic (mild 14.6, moderate 3.2, severe 1.0), 80.3% normal; rank 60.

MeasuredOrthopedic Foundation for Animals

OFA submissions are breeding-stock skewed and under-report affected dogs; period undated ('current all-data', accessed Oct 9 2026). Small base (412 dogs); OFA lists no elbow row for the breed.

Most common disorders

Wikipedia (veterinary literature): alopecia X (Pomeranians were 79.3% of a Japanese referral clinic caseload and 26.5% of a US endocrine alopecia caseload); patellar luxation (6.5% in an English study, the highest of all breeds there); atlantoaxial subluxation; tracheal collapse (6 to 16.7% of three US referral caseloads); congenital portosystemic shunt; gallbladder mucocoele; cryptorchidism in males; merle-coloured dogs may have deafness and eye defects. The Royal Kennel Club lists eye testing (BVA/KC/ISDS) as Best Practice and flags conformational concerns.

EditorialWikipedia

Wikipedia summarises the studies; the primary papers were not read. Referral-caseload shares show where Pomeranians present, not how common a disease is in the breed.

How to read this page

Every value carries a label. Measured means peer-reviewed data on many dogs. Studied means peer-reviewed, smaller or indirect. Breed club means a club or registry states it. Editorial means expert opinion with no measurement behind it. Where two good sources disagree, both are shown and neither is averaged.

Published when the entry rests on the best information available from no fewer than three independent sources, checked by a second pass that did not write it. 7 sources on this page. Found something wrong? Tell us and the correction is logged with its date.
