Pudelpointer.

'Versatile working gundog with all the aptitudes required for the breed, for all kinds of work in the fields, in the woods and in the water.' A rough-coated pointing dog bred from the Poodle and the Pointer. NAVHDA-recognized versatile breed: bred 'to dependably hunt and point game, to retrieve on both land and water, and to track wounded game on both land and water.'.

Breed sets the odds. The parents set the dog. Every number here shows its source, its spread and how sure we are. Nothing on this page is a prediction about one dog.

The work

What it was built to do in the field, and what a test or trial asks of it.

Role

'Versatile working gundog with all the aptitudes required for the breed, for all kinds of work in the fields, in the woods and in the water.' A rough-coated pointing dog bred from the Poodle and the Pointer. NAVHDA-recognized versatile breed: bred 'to dependably hunt and point game, to retrieve on both land and water, and to track wounded game on both land and water.'

Breed clubFCI-Standard N° 216, 2004

NAVHDA definition from navhda_rules; recognition from navhda_breeds. AKC page: 'a calm, self-controlled, versatile gun dog with a distinct hunting instinct and lacks game or gun shyness.'

Field trial standard

NAVHDA testing, not field trials. Natural Ability (young dogs) scores seven hereditary traits: nose, search, water, pointing, tracking, desire, cooperation (max 112). Utility tests 'a hunting dog's usefulness to the on-foot hunter in all phases of hunting both before and after the shot, in field and marsh' (max 204). Both North American clubs gate breeding on these: NAPS/NAPPA males must prize in Utility (NAPPA: minimum 175 points); females must score 105+ and prize in Natural Ability, or prize in a Gun Dog or Utility test.

Water work

Water is in the breed's definition: the FCI standard names work 'in the water'; NAVHDA's versatile definition requires retrieving on both land and water, and every NAVHDA test the clubs require for breeding includes a water phase.

Cold water

4 of 5 · Derived: a hard, dense, medium double coat on a breed the standard describes as a versatile gundog 'for all kinds of work in the fields, in the woods and in the water', whose North American clubs require a NAVHDA prize (which includes water work) to breed.

DerivedFCI-Standard N° 216, 2004

Derived from coat (fci_std) and the NAVHDA-based breeding requirements (naps_breeding, nappa_breeding); not measured.

How common the problems are

Evaluated dogs skew toward breeding stock; the numbers are still the best there are.

Hip dysplasia

10.1% · 1,043 hip evaluations, all data through the Oct 5 2026 read: 89.0% normal (17.0% excellent, 61.0% good, 11.0% fair), 10.1% dysplastic (6.2% mild, 3.4% moderate, 0.5% severe).

MeasuredOrthopedic Foundation for Animals

OFA's public breed statistics; a small evaluated population that skews toward breeding stock (both North American clubs require hip certification to breed). Abnormal results are under-submitted. Read directly from OFA's statistics service (api.ofa.org/api/ds.php) on Oct 5 2026; Hou et al. 2013 prints no per-breed percentages.

Elbow dysplasia

5.2% · 231 elbow evaluations, all data through the Oct 5 2026 read: 94.8% normal, 5.2% abnormal (5.2% grade I, 0.0% grade II, 0.0% grade III).

MeasuredOrthopedic Foundation for Animals

Very small n; same OFA caveats as hips.

How to read this page

Every value carries a label. Measured means peer-reviewed data on many dogs. Studied means peer-reviewed, smaller or indirect. Breed club means a club or registry states it. Editorial means expert opinion with no measurement behind it. Where two good sources disagree, both are shown and neither is averaged.

Published when the entry rests on the best information available from no fewer than three independent sources, checked by a second pass that did not write it. 6 sources on this page. Found something wrong? Tell us and the correction is logged with its date.

Every breed, read the same way.

The breed index grows as entries clear the standard. Gun dogs first.
