FCI standard 275

Rastreador Brasileiro.

FCI 275 utilization: hunting dog used for flushing and cornering prey animals (the standard's words: 'flushing and corner prey animals'). Temperament line: they hunt in pairs, trios and packs, or even alone as a scent dog, so they should behave calmly. History (FCI): developed by genetic selection on the American Foxhound by the Brazilian breeder Osvaldo Aranha Filho, to suit the Brazilian climate; the evolution of the old Urrador Brasileiro (Brazilian Howler); first recognized by FCI on September 1 1967, suffering a major setback from the 1970s until breeding resumed in 2000; widely bred in rural areas, mainly in the north of Brazil. Wikipedia PT: Aranha began in the 1950s to make a hound for fox, armadillo, puma, jaguar and peccary, bred on local deerhound (veadeiro) and imported American Foxhound, Treeing Walker, Bluetick, English Coonhound, Black and Tan Coonhound and Petit Bleu de Gascogne; a 1973 piroplasmosis epidemic plus a tick-dip overdose killed 39 dogs of his kennel and in 1974 the Brazil Kennel Club considered the breed extinct, so FCI recognition was lost; dogs he had given to hunters and farmers kept the line going; from the 2000s the GARRB rescue group (Victor Jones, Salvador) searched out, catalogued and bred descendants (55 registered dogs after ten years, ~50 more owned by people outside the project); FCI recognition regained in 2019. Wikipedia EN: first recognized by FCI in 1967; by 1973 disease and an insecticide overdose had eliminated the breed's population and both FCI and the CBC declared it extinct and de-listed it that year; recreated through mixing and controlled breeding of other hounds; CBKC re-recognized it in 2013; updated FCI standard 2019..

Role

Wikipedia EN: first recognized by FCI in 1967; by 1973 disease and an insecticide overdose had eliminated the breed's population and both FCI and the CBC declared it extinct and de-listed it that year; recreated through mixing and controlled breeding of other hounds; CBKC re-recognized it in 2013; updated FCI standard 2019.

Extinction and recreation are recorded as the sources state them. The sources differ on the year (PT: 1974 by the Brazil Kennel Club; EN: 1973, by FCI and CBC) and on who declared it; FCI itself says only 'a major setback from the 70s to the year 2000'. Both stand.

Primary game

Wikipedia PT: made for fox, armadillo, puma (onca parda), jaguar and peccary (porco-do-mato); skilled on small game and especially on large game. FCI states no quarry beyond 'prey animals'.

EditorialWikipedia (Portuguese)

Single editorial source for the quarry list; FCI names no species.

Also used on

Wikipedia PT: in the Pantanal still used by cattle ranchers, even illegally, against jaguars, cougars (sucuarana) and maned wolves that threaten stock; also valued as an alarm dog (loud bay at the gate). Wikipedia PT, on the rescue group's aim: scent-trail ability kept alive so the breed might one day serve in search and rescue.

EditorialWikipedia (Portuguese)

Single editorial source; the ranch use is described there as illegal in places.

Search pattern

FCI: works in pairs, trios and packs, or alone as a scent dog; calm in the pack; very resistant and persistent, able to run for hours in rough terrain under high heat. Wikipedia PT: usually works in pairs or trios, always by scenting, locating, flushing and cornering the quarry so the hunter can shoot it; the volume and range of voice is striking, with different howls to say the trail is found, lost, or that the quarry is near or far; loud bay is why it is called Urrador (howler) in some regions. Wikipedia EN: Urrador is named for its signature baying and howl when hunting.

FCI and Wikipedia PT agree on pair, trio and pack work. No source read prints a working distance, so range is left blank.

Field trial standard

FCI 275 classification: Group 6, Section 1.1 large-sized hounds, 'without working trial'.

Water work

Wikipedia PT, on the founder's aim: hunting in dense forest, swamp and even rivers, since the jaguar is a good swimmer. This is the stated breeding aim, not a measured trait.

EditorialWikipedia (Portuguese)

Single editorial source; intent, not evidence.

How common the problems are

Evaluated dogs skew toward breeding stock; the numbers are still the best there are.

Most common disorders

Wikipedia PT: because the breed is being rebuilt there is little or no information on specific diseases. The rescue group (GARRB) planned to breed only from dogs cleared of hip dysplasia on X-ray and passed on a natural tracking aptitude test.

EditorialWikipedia (Portuguese)

Single editorial source; an intent to screen, not a published result.
