Russell Terrier.

AKC: a strong, active, lithe, predominately white working terrier; the small, oval, compressible chest 'is the hallmark of the breed and is the single most important attribute' for working below ground, small enough to be spanned by an average man's hands, 'approximately 14 to 15 inches at the top set'; temperament that of a spirited and game hunter. FCI 345 utilization: a good working terrier with ability to go to ground, an excellent companion; girth behind the elbows about 40 to 43 cm (15.7 to 16.9 in); history: a strain of Fox Terriers bred to run with foxhounds and go to ground to bolt the fox and other quarry from their dens. UKC: a small, agile, active hunting terrier built to go to ground; notoriously fearless, needs little encouragement to go to ground; the UKC history says the Jack Russell was the smaller, longer-bodied, shorter-legged dog used almost exclusively to hunt vermin and bolt rabbits. RKC: roots in the working terriers of the British Isles, which kept down vermin in homesteads. Wikipedia (Russell Terrier): a predominantly white working terrier with an instinct to hunt prey underground; 'a working breed, not a companion breed'..

The body

What the breed is built like. Registry standards give an ideal, not a range.

Height at the shoulder

9.8 to 12 in

Breed clubAKC breed standard, 2009

AKC, UKC and the AKC page agree on 10 to 12 in; the FCI ideal starts at 25 cm (9.8 in), which sets the low. No source splits height by sex. The AKC standard's own working measure follows under role.

Span of the AKC page (9 to 15 lb), UKC (11 to 13 lb) and FCI (11 to 13.2 lb). The AKC standard prints no weight figure.

Coat

AKC: smooth (dense, short, coarse, with undercoat), broken (intermediate, usually facial furnishings) or rough (harsh and dense with undercoat); weatherproof; shown natural and unaltered, sculpted furnishings severely penalized; no preference by coat type. UKC: rough, broken or smooth; rough and broken may be stripped. FCI 345: coats should not be altered (stripped out) to look smooth or broken. Color: AKC white predominates (at least 51 percent) with black and/or tan; FCI white must predominate with black and/or tan; UKC solid white or predominantly white with black, tan or brown. AKC page: grooming 2, shedding 3.

How long they live, and what they costSources differ

Two numbers, two measures. Median lifespan: in a large sample of this breed, the age by which half had died; read it as the typical lifespan (UK, 2024, 584,734 dogs). Life expectancy at birth: how many years a newborn of this breed is expected to live, worked from the death rates at every age in UK veterinary records, the same life-table method used for people (VetCompass, 2022). It runs lower because every early death pulls the average down and because it comes from clinics, not registries. KENAI leads with the median and shows the other beside it. Neither is averaged.

It is not the Parson Russell Terrier, which has its own entry. The match to the AKC dog is by name. The RKC page says the UK Jack Russell type differs from the Australian type behind FCI 345 (UK breeders kept a dog like the Parson in proportion but in a smaller frame), and the table does not say how vets classed the dogs.

Primary game

FCI 345: fox and other quarry bolted from their dens. UKC: vermin and rabbits (bolting rabbits). Wikipedia (Jack Russell Terrier): used on ground-dwelling quarry such as groundhog, badger, otter, and red and grey fox. RKC (terrier group text): terriers pursue fox, badger, rat and otter above and below ground.

Breed clubFCI-Standard N° 345, 2012

Registry wording for fox, vermin and rabbit; the groundhog and otter list is Wikipedia (editorial) and refers to the Jack Russell in general.

Search pattern

Wikipedia (Jack Russell Terrier): to bolt a fox the dog 'will not bark but will expect attention to the quarry continuously'; breeders of registered JRTCA/JRTCGB working dogs prize extreme intelligence, athleticism, fearlessness and a vocal dog. UKC and AKC: a game hunter that goes to ground with little encouragement; the UKC says aggression toward anything other than legitimate quarry detracts from the dog. Bolting rather than baying is the historic job (FCI 345: to bolt the fox and other quarry from their dens). AKC Earthdog general text: small terriers were bred to bark at the quarry in the den and to bolt or draw it.

EditorialWikipedia

Wikipedia is the only source read for silent versus vocal work, and it is not cited at its own source in the copy read; the other lines are registry. The silent-at-quarry claim and the Earthdog 'bark at the quarry' sentence disagree and both stand.

Field trial standard

AKC Earthdog eligible-breeds page lists Russell Terrier. AKC Earthdog (non-competitive den tests for small terriers and Dachshunds): Introduction to Quarry (10 ft tunnel, one right angle, caged rats behind bars; handler may encourage), Junior Earthdog (30 ft den, three right angles, 30 s to reach the rats, 60 s working them, title after two passes under two judges), then Senior Earthdog (30 ft den, three right angles, false unscented exit and unscented bedding, 90 s work, recall from the den) and Master Earthdog (hunt to the den with a bracemate over 100 to 300 yd, mark the entrance, work the quarry through a 6 in narrowing). The AKC page says the tests were built for dogs bred to track game above and below ground, bark at the quarry in the den, and bolt or draw it for the hunter. FCI 345 classifies the breed Group 3, Section 2 (small terriers), working trial optional. Wikipedia (Russell Terrier) lists natural hunting with earthwork and go-to-ground among the events fanciers run.

How common the problems are

Evaluated dogs skew toward breeding stock; the numbers are still the best there are.

Most common disorders

RKC pre-breeding screening for the Jack Russell Terrier: DNA test for primary lens luxation (PLL) under Good Practice; DNA tests for late onset ataxia (LOA) and spinocerebellar ataxia (SCA) and the BVA/KC/ISDS eye scheme under Best Practice. Wikipedia: an inherited ataxia with myokymia and seizures (KCNJ10) is recognised across the Russell terriers; US hunting dogs are prone to skunk toxic shock syndrome.

Every value carries a label. Measured means peer-reviewed data on many dogs. Studied means peer-reviewed, smaller or indirect. Breed club means a club or registry states it. Editorial means expert opinion with no measurement behind it. Where two good sources disagree, both are shown and neither is averaged.
