Samoyed.

FCI utilization: sledge and companion dog (Group 5, Section 1 Nordic sledge dogs, without working trial); in the south of the range white, black and brown parti-colored dogs were reindeer herders, in the north pure white hunting and sledge dogs. AKC standard: 'essentially a working dog' for cold climates, structured as a draft dog, capable of great endurance. UKC: 'a working dog, capable of a variety of tasks'; the Samoyede people used the dogs to hunt, herd reindeer and haul sledges. RKC (listed in the Pastoral group): herding and guarding reindeer, pulling loads and even hunting. AKC Expert Advice: herders, guardians, hunting dogs and sled dogs year-round; a Samoyed named Rex led a team on a 64-mile Idaho mail route and in the 1952 Donner Pass train rescue..

Coat

AKC: double coat, soft short thick close wool undercoat with longer harsh outer hair standing straight out, free from curl; ruff around neck and shoulders, more on males; weather resistant, 'quality rather than quantity'; glistens with a silver sheen. UKC and FCI agree (profuse, thick polar coat). Colors pure white, white and biscuit, cream, or all biscuit. RKC: coat length medium, grooming every day, sheds.

Heat tolerance

2 of 5 · Profuse, thick double coat: soft dense undercoat under a long harsh outer coat that stands off the body, with a ruff (AKC, UKC, FCI); AKC says the coat is heavy because his work lies in cold climates.

The work

Primary game

UKC history: Samoyed dogs were used to hunt, herd reindeer and haul sledges. FCI history: in the northern parts hunting and sledge dogs. AKC Expert Advice: the Samoyede first used the dogs to hunt reindeer, then moved to herding as the reindeer were partly domesticated. FCI temperament: 'the hunting instinct is very slight'.

Breed clubUnited Kennel Club

Reindeer is the historic quarry, and the FCI says the hunting instinct is now very slight.

Also used on

AKC Expert Advice: herding and guarding reindeer, guarding children and property, sled work and polar expeditions (Amundsen's 1911 South Pole trip, Kilburn Scott and Jackson imports); today sled and cart racing, excursion sledding or carting, weight pull, backpacking and herding (ducks and sheep in place of reindeer).

Field trial standard

FCI: 'Without working trial' (Group 5, Section 1 Nordic sledge dogs). No sled-race or herding trial rules were read; AKC Expert Advice says herding and sled racing are open to the breed.

Breed clubFederation Cynologique Internationale, 2019

Trial rules themselves were not read.

Cold water

4 of 5 · AKC standard: 'As his work lies in cold climates, his coat should be heavy and weather-resistant'; UKC: the coat was essential to living and working in the harshest Arctic environment. AKC Expert Advice: on a 750-mile serum-run team at minus 50 the Samoyeds never needed the coats the musher carried. No source read describes water work.

DerivedAKC breed standard

Derived from the coat plus the breed's Arctic work. Cold weather, not water: no source describes swimming or water work.

How to read this page

Every value carries a label. Measured means peer-reviewed data on many dogs. Studied means peer-reviewed, smaller or indirect. Breed club means a club or registry states it. Editorial means expert opinion with no measurement behind it. Where two good sources disagree, both are shown and neither is averaged.

Published when the entry rests on the best information available from no fewer than three independent sources, checked by a second pass that did not write it. 9 sources on this page. Found something wrong? Tell us and the correction is logged with its date.
