Segugio Italiano.
FCI 198 and 337 utilization (both): dog for hunting especially the hare and the wild boar. FCI 198 (rough): adapted to the most difficult terrains, mountains or level ground, very resistant and fast, works with ardour and passion alone or in a pack; compared with the short-haired it is more reserved, less exuberant, wise, calm and poised for the job; voice resonant and very harmonious. FCI 337 (short): scent hound adapted to the most varied terrains, great resistance and good speed, extremely eager, alone or in a pack; steady but not very outgoing; resonant, very pleasant voice. AKC page (Segugio Italiano Club of America text): a scenthound originally used for wild boar; today most often seen hunting rabbits and other small game in the US; can be run solo or in packs, rarely tracking unintended game; used to track and to track and kill its quarry; powerful nose, works any terrain for hours on end. SIPS (the Italian breed society): organizes working trials on hare and on wild boar and pack (muta) work. Wikipedia: traditional quarry hare, may also be used on boar; hunts well alone, in small groups or in packs, the hunters standing still while the hounds drive game toward them..
Breed sets the odds. The parents set the dog. Every number here shows its source, its spread and how sure we are. Nothing on this page is a prediction about one dog.
The lines
Within one breed the line can matter more than the breed. Where the lines differ, the page says which one a value belongs to.
Segugio Italiano a pelo forte (rough-haired, wire-haired), FCI Standard 198. Harsh coat not over 5 cm; males 52 to 60 cm, females 50 to 58 cm; FCI describes it as more reserved, calm and poised than the short-haired.
Segugio Italiano a pelo raso (short-haired), FCI Standard 337. Short, dense, smooth coat; males 52 to 58 cm, females 48 to 56 cm. A separate FCI breed from the rough-haired; the AKC Foundation Stock Service lists both as one breed.
The body
What the breed is built like. Registry standards give an ideal, not a range.
Height at the shoulder
FCI prints no ideal, so no center. Low and high span FCI and the AKC band.
FCI prints no ideal, so no center. Low and high span FCI and the AKC band.
Weight
FCI prints no ideal. Low and high span FCI and the AKC band.

Coat
AKC's colour list (grizzle) is wider than FCI's fawn and black-and-tan; both stand.
Wikipedia's cooler-mountains remark is conjecture from its sources, not a registry statement.
Shedding
AKC breed page trait score, 1 to 5: a breed-club tendency, never a measurement.
Heat tolerance
Derived from the coat description (short harsh coat, no stated undercoat = 4). No measured data. Wikipedia's remark that the rough coat may suit cooler mountains is not a measurement.
Derived from the coat description (short dense smooth coat = 4; 5 would need a stated single coat). No measured data.
The dog at home
What the breed asks of a day. The first thing most homes get wrong.
Exercise need
Text only. No Royal Kennel Club page exists for this breed, so exercise_need_min is left blank (library rule: minutes come from the RKC band mapping). AKC trait scores are AKC bands, not C-BARQ.
Energy
AKC trait scores are AKC bands, not C-BARQ means. AKC page says easily trained and firm-handler-needed in different places; both stand.
Grooming load
Scored 2 (weekly brush) from the AKC grooming text. No RKC band exists for this breed. AKC's own grooming score of 1 sits beside the text and both stand.
The work
What it was built to do in the field, and what a test or trial asks of it.
Role
Both FCI standards agree on hare and wild boar. Editorial views are shown beside the standards, labelled; where they disagree both stand (Chad, Oct 8 2026). The AKC page says boar was the original quarry and that US dogs mostly run rabbits; FCI and Wikipedia put hare first. The Wikipedia line that hunters stand still while the hounds drive game to them is a general description; the FCI text does not say it.
Primary game
Single list for both coats; the two FCI standards print the same utilization line.
Also used on
Thin: FCI names only hare and boar, both treated as primary. AKC and Wikipedia add small game and secondary boar.
Search pattern
Voice on the line is stated by both FCI standards. The 12 hours is Wikipedia's figure citing Alderton and Morris, not a registry statement. Wikipedia's 'traditionally kept as pack hounds' sits beside FCI's 'alone or in a pack'; both stand.
Field trial standard
The rules text of the ENCI trials was not read (ENCI site blocked from this environment). Look at ENCI regolamento speciale delle prove di lavoro for razze da seguita (SIPS download area).
How common the problems are
Evaluated dogs skew toward breeding stock; the numbers are still the best there are.
Most common disorders
Single club-written statement; no survey or screening figure read. The 11 to 13 year band is not placed in median_lifespan_yr (library rule).
More
akc bands
Fourteen AKC bands in one row; the selector reads each by name. Breed-club ratings: a tendency, never a measurement.
How to read this page
Every value carries a label. Measured means peer-reviewed data on many dogs. Studied means peer-reviewed, smaller or indirect. Breed club means a club or registry states it. Editorial means expert opinion with no measurement behind it. Where two good sources disagree, both are shown and neither is averaged.
Published when the entry rests on the best information available from no fewer than three independent sources, checked by a second pass that did not write it. 3 sources on this page. Found something wrong? Tell us and the correction is logged with its date.
