Breed clubInternational Silken Windhound Society

UKC and ISWS print the same range for both sexes; ISWS FAQ says males tend to be somewhat larger and heavier.

Coat

UKC and ISWS: soft and silky, moderately long, straight, slightly wavy or curly; longer feathering on the backs of the forelegs, brisket, hindquarters, neck and tail; face, feet and fronts of the legs naturally short; shown natural with minimal trimming. All colors and markings accepted. ISWS FAQ: some shed little, others more; they do not blow coat like Golden Retrievers or Borzoi; puppies often blow coat at 12 to 18 months.

How common the problems are

Evaluated dogs skew toward breeding stock; the numbers are still the best there are.

Most common disorders

ISWS: a remarkably healthy breed; life expectancy can easily extend into the mid teens. UKC history: most live into their late teens; the oldest known lived a few months past 20 (breed-club claims, not a median). Some Silkens are sensitive to ivermectin and related drugs (MDR1 test available); a few cases of cryptorchidism; bloat, mega-esophagus and grain intolerance noted rarely; sensitive to anesthetics and most do not tolerate flea collars; Lotus Syndrome is a research project; Holter (cardiac) testing is a health project. Silkens were recently admitted into the OFA CHIC program.

How to read this page

Every value carries a label. Measured means peer-reviewed data on many dogs. Studied means peer-reviewed, smaller or indirect. Breed club means a club or registry states it. Editorial means expert opinion with no measurement behind it. Where two good sources disagree, both are shown and neither is averaged.

Published when the entry rests on the best information available from no fewer than three independent sources, checked by a second pass that did not write it. 5 sources on this page. Found something wrong? Tell us and the correction is logged with its date.
