The dog at home

What the breed asks of a day. The first thing most homes get wrong.

Energy

SKK: excellent mentality; works very well as a family dog but should be given the chance to be in the forest and hunt in the season, not sit in a kennel yard or apartment. UKC: calm and kind, faithful and keen. Wikipedia: strong attachment to its master; a highly intelligent breed. No AKC page exists (not an AKC breed).

Breed clubFederation Cynologique Internationale

FCI, UKC (via history) and SKK agree on hare and fox. SKK: 'the audibility of the voice could perhaps be better.' Editorial views are shown beside the standard, labelled; where they disagree both stand (Chad, Oct 8 2026).

Primary game

FCI: hare and fox. SKK: hare and fox. Wikipedia: hares, squirrels and foxes, as well as birds and larger game such as elk.

Breed clubFederation Cynologique Internationale

Wikipedia's elk, birds and squirrels are not in the FCI or SKK text; FCI says never deer. Both stand.

Also used on

FCI: traditionally different small game. Wikipedia: squirrels, birds and elk (farmers kept one all-around dog).

Breed clubFederation Cynologique Internationale

FCI states 'never deer'; Wikipedia says elk. Both stand.

Search pattern

SKK: a quick starter (snabb upptagare) that drives with a dense, nuanced voice; the audibility of the voice could perhaps be better; after the hunt it always seeks out its owner; thanks to its size and weight very enduring and can hunt for days in a row; strongly closed paws with plenty of hair around the pads. FCI: gives tongue; not a pack hound. Wikipedia: drives the quarry for the hunter.

Breed clubSvenska Kennelklubben (Swedish Kennel Club)

FCI says not a pack hound. Single hound work is stated by FCI. Editorial views are shown beside the standard, labelled; where they disagree both stand (Chad, Oct 8 2026).

How common the problems are

Evaluated dogs skew toward breeding stock; the numbers are still the best there are.

Most common disorders

SKK: a relatively healthy breed; hip dysplasia (HD) and epilepsy occur in the breed; contact the breed club for more information.

How to read this page

Every value carries a label. Measured means peer-reviewed data on many dogs. Studied means peer-reviewed, smaller or indirect. Breed club means a club or registry states it. Editorial means expert opinion with no measurement behind it. Where two good sources disagree, both are shown and neither is averaged.

Published when the entry rests on the best information available from no fewer than three independent sources, checked by a second pass that did not write it. 4 sources on this page. Found something wrong? Tell us and the correction is logged with its date.
