Standard Schnauzer.

FCI 182 utilization: watch and companion dog; history: originally a stable dog in Southern Germany that watched for every rodent and killed it in a flash, hence the name Rattler (ratter); entered in 1895 as the rough-haired Pinscher. RKC: developed as a vermin killer, proved versatile by herding livestock and pulling small carts. UKC: used as a guard dog and rat catcher; prototype of the three Schnauzers. AKC page: a high-spirited farm dog from Germany. Wikipedia: traditionally a farm dog with a particular aptitude for ratting; in Germany an endangered breed..

Breed sets the odds. The parents set the dog. Every number here shows its source, its spread and how sure we are. Nothing on this page is a prediction about one dog.

FCI, RKC, UKC and Wikipedia agree on ratting, guarding and farm work.

Primary game

FCI 182: rodents (stable and farm ratter). UKC: rats. RKC: vermin.

Breed clubFCI-Standard N° 182, 2007

Registry statements name vermin only; no game is hunted.

Also used on

RKC: herding livestock and pulling small carts. UKC: guard dog. AMSC history (describing the original Schnauzer): drover's dog pulling produce carts from farm to town and guarding them, herding sheep, cattle and hogs, and the full duties of a regulation farm dog. FCI 182: family, guard and companion dog.

AMSC history is a breed club's account of the original Schnauzer, written on the Miniature's page.

Field trial standard

FCI 182: Group 2, Section 1 Pinscher and Schnauzer type, without working trial. AMSC history: German Schnauzer clubs hold periodic ratting trials to keep the Schnauzer a working breed, and Schnauzers can be seen in Barn Hunt and Earthdog trials in the US. AKC Earthdog eligible-breeds page (read Oct 8 2026) does NOT list the Standard Schnauzer; it does list the Miniature Schnauzer.

How common the problems are

Evaluated dogs skew toward breeding stock; the numbers are still the best there are.

Hip dysplasia

Elbow dysplasia

Most common disorders

RKC lists a DNA test for dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) and BVA/KC hip scoring under its breed health schemes, and states that the tests are recommended where evidence indicates the conditions are a significant concern in the breed. OFA hip dysplasia 8.5% of 5,564 evaluated dogs (see hip row).

How to read this page

Every value carries a label. Measured means peer-reviewed data on many dogs. Studied means peer-reviewed, smaller or indirect. Breed club means a club or registry states it. Editorial means expert opinion with no measurement behind it. Where two good sources disagree, both are shown and neither is averaged.

Published when the entry rests on the best information available from no fewer than three independent sources, checked by a second pass that did not write it. 6 sources on this page. Found something wrong? Tell us and the correction is logged with its date.
