Westphalian Dachsbracke.

FCI 100: utilization 'Hound' (Group 6 Scenthounds, Section 1.3 small-sized hounds, with working trial); the short-legged variety of the German Hound. Wild und Hund (2009): the typical forest working dog (Waldgebrauchshund) that should find all game and bring it vocally in front of the guns; main use is the 'laute Jagd' (hunting with voice) on small game and increasingly on large-area drives for hoofed game. Wikipedia DE: a small, handy dog suited to small hunting grounds..

Breed sets the odds. The parents set the dog. Every number here shows its source, its spread and how sure we are. Nothing on this page is a prediction about one dog.

0INHeightall null. An ideal from the standard, not a range.

The body

What the breed is built like. Registry standards give an ideal, not a range.

Height at the shoulder

11.8 to 15 in

Breed clubFederation Cynologique Internationale, 1987

FCI and UKC agree; neither prints sex split or ideal, so no center. The 35 cm figure is a historical breeder aim, not the current standard.

Coat

FCI 100: very dense, coarse coat over the whole body, short on head, leathers and lower legs, longer on back, neck and tail underside; red to yellow with a black saddle or mantle and white Bracken markings. Bicolour dogs and dogs with black head markings are undesirable; chocolate brown is a fault. UKC agrees. Wikipedia DE and Wild und Hund (2009): mostly tricolour, bicolour (red to yellow with white) rarer.

Breed clubFederation Cynologique Internationale, 1987

FCI 100 and UKC agree; Wikipedia DE and Wild und Hund state bicolour dogs exist, which the standard calls undesirable.

Heat tolerance

4 of 5 · Whole body including the underside very dense and coarse coat; short on head, ears and lower legs, longer over back, neck and underside of tail (FCI 100; UKC agrees).

DerivedFederation Cynologique Internationale, 1987

Derived from the standard's coat description (short dense = 4). No measured heat data.

The work

What it was built to do in the field, and what a test or trial asks of it.

Role

FCI 100: utilization 'Hound' (Group 6 Scenthounds, Section 1.3 small-sized hounds, with working trial); the short-legged variety of the German Hound. Wild und Hund (2009): the typical forest working dog (Waldgebrauchshund) that should find all game and bring it vocally in front of the guns; main use is the 'laute Jagd' (hunting with voice) on small game and increasingly on large-area drives for hoofed game. Wikipedia DE: a small, handy dog suited to small hunting grounds.

Breed clubFederation Cynologique Internationale, 1987

FCI utilization line is the one word 'Hound'; the rest is editorial (Wild und Hund, Wikipedia DE). Not a FCI Section 2 blood hound.

Primary game

Wild und Hund (2009): small game (hare, fox, rabbit) by voice, and increasingly hoofed game on drives (the article opens with a hunter's account of a dog bringing two red deer to the gun). Wikipedia DE: Stöbern ('laute Jagd') on hare, fox and rabbit; drive, Stöber and Riegel hunts on hoofed game, including roe.

Breed clubHartmut Roth, 2009

Game lists are editorial; the FCI and UKC standards name no game.

Also used on

Blood-trail (Schweiß) work on wounded hoofed game: Wild und Hund (2009) says the fine nose, calm and endurance make the dog capable of concentrated leash work on a blood track, but the article declines to sell it as a short-legged blood hound. Wikipedia DE lists Schweißarbeit (Nachsuche von Schalenwild) and finding and retrieving small game. Historically also used to go to ground and, with water-loving hardness, on otter (Wild und Hund 2009).

Search pattern

Hound that gives tongue on the track (Fährtenlaut) at a slow pace: Wild und Hund (2009) describes secure, tenacious sticking to the started track, strong will to find, and persistent trail voice; the slow pace disturbs game less, which returns sooner to cover, and the low-legged dog follows with voice shortly after; game seldom flees at speed in front of it, so it can be read and shot. Wikipedia DE cites a Niedersächsischer Jäger 2/2015 piece titled 'Solojäger'. Wild und Hund adds that it must be worked a lot or it finds its own work.

Field trial standard

FCI 100: 'with working trial'. Wild und Hund (2009), on the Deutscher Bracken-Club: since the 1972 Zuchtordnung only dogs with an aptitude (Anlagen) or use test and a successful conformation grade may be bred; today only gunproof dogs scoring at least 3 in the aptitude subjects and conformation; use tests (Leistungsprüfungen) and Leistungszeichen are desired. Puppies go only to active hunters who present them at tests.

Breed clubFederation Cynologique Internationale, 1987

Test rules not read; the breeding requirement is the 2009 article's account of the club's Zuchtordnung.

Water work

Wild und Hund (2009): the dog need neither retrieve nor work in water. Same article, history: some early dogs were used on otter, which needed water pleasure and hardness.

EditorialHartmut Roth, 2009

Single editorial source, two statements that look opposed; the first is the current view, the second is historical.

How to read this page

Every value carries a label. Measured means peer-reviewed data on many dogs. Studied means peer-reviewed, smaller or indirect. Breed club means a club or registry states it. Editorial means expert opinion with no measurement behind it. Where two good sources disagree, both are shown and neither is averaged.

Published when the entry rests on the best information available from no fewer than three independent sources, checked by a second pass that did not write it. 2 sources on this page. Found something wrong? Tell us and the correction is logged with its date.
